We had a new Challenger at our Sunday cruise/hangout this past weekend...that is NOT a small car!

$38K. Will it be worth it? I say yes. But an orange one with black stripes please.

Tempting, VERY tempting. If I was in the market for a Mustang, I'd have to seriously consider this over that.
Retro Camaro coming soon? Eh, who cares...

Only knock on Challenger...all automatics for now. Rumor has it a 6 speed will come out in the '10 model. Will be a great combo IF it lives long enough to see the light of day. Automotive News puts the Challenger on the block for termination along with the Viper, Magnum and Nitro. In the age of increasing green and stricter CAFE, the HEMI may be shown the door and muscle cars with it. Ahhh, too bad. I really liked the way the trends were going and some hot cars were coming out. Kinda sad that Chrysler gets bit again. They finally bring somebody to the party, just in time to see the lights go out....1970 all over again.
I do prefer this over the Camaro....and it looks like a bargain compared to the $helby S197's.

I wonder about the future of V-8 SUV's and muscle cars when $4 or $5 a gallon gas is just around the corner. Ford got the new Mustang out ahead of everyone else and has been able to sell a bunch but I'm not so sure that the new Camarro or this Challenger will have the sales volume to survive for very long.

I don't remember which magazine I read it in, but they had an article some time back that Ford was going to phase out all V-8s. Then the Hot Rod Magazine that has the nice write up about Shelby had a good one about the Terlingua Mustang which uses a V-6 and it seems to run quite well. I also saw that about the Challenger and some other cars being dropped again. Who knows, maybe all in all not a bad thing as the V-6 in that Mustang really can perform well in street legal trim and you could make it a real monster for just off road.

'Tis true Ron...
Ford has said that there is no way to keep V8's in lineup of an era demanding 35 MPG FLEET average....the trucks must have 'em for towing/pulling capacity
so the cars have to make up the slack. engineers said there is no way now to hide a less-than-20mpg car in the lineup. But, they say it's ok vecause they see boosting as a way to get the numbers....twin turbo V6's will replace the V8's and deliver similar power but still get 30 MPG.

A big "thanks!" to Rick Kopec for presenting the facts and calling out the "old man" on his bull sh!t comments about Pete Brock's Daytona Coupe design in the Hot Rod Mag. article.
Rick's analysis is a must read for anyone interested in the real truth regarding the testing of the original Coupe. Check it out at www.cobracountry.com. There are also some great B&W pictures of the first coupe. I hope Pete Brock is not holding his breath waiting on an apology.

Has anyone purchased a Challenger since this original post? If so please share your experience, as I am considering an RT or SRT8.
Thanks

One of the options is a 5 or six speed tranny. Go through the process and pick out the options of choice. I did and the total package was $42,900.
Loads of goodies to add. I can't believe the standard equipment is a six cylinder. Even though it is HO it is still a six. This car was born to run and it needs a Hemi!

I was going to say the same as above. Nice price shown and the car has SRT in the grill. But the SRT8 is $42000.
Same as when I bought my Magnum a few years back. Could have got one for $18000. But for the big Hemi, they weren't coming off $40,000. Its mileage city is 13mpg and hwy is 18 mpg [75 mph cruise] That is driving it easy. If I put my foot in it, I change the computer read out because it drops like the DOW!

The SRT does not qualify for Employee pricing? I have gotten mixed answers from numerous dealers.

No idea on the "employee" pricing ploy. But the SRT8 is not going to be anywhere near $19000. Twice that or more.

A six with a "pinwheel"or two would make a real interesting ride.

Chrysler is having problems with the 6 speed. Apparently there is a misfire in the engine, but it isn't a spark misfire. The autos have it, but you don't notice is like you do the 6 speeds. Production keeps getting delayed. I drove a prototype 6 speed last year with the 6.1. It was pretty incredible. They also had a V-10 prototype running around to use up the V-10's when the Viper disappears, but due to the economy, it has been axed.
