It is amazing some of the crap that is voted into law.

I do understand the "green" thing but why vote into law something that says we will be REQUIRED to be dependant on someone else.

Liberalism? Gee...maybe you should think that statement through a bit more before commenting. It isn't liberalism, it is cronyism, or maybe some other form of "you pat my back, I'll pat yours".

Remember this just a few years ago? No liberalism involved in this debate that I recall.

so ... lemme see if I have this right ..... America invented the lightbulb, but now we can't make one?

Regarding the CFl disposal or breakage .... Retail outlets are open to legal exposure for breaching the EPA regs should one of these break in the store. If they don't follow the EPA regs then they are open to being sued by customers who "get sick" from the vapor & dust. Damned if they do and damned if they don't.

Good idea though to have a low consumption bulb - just somewhere along the way the good idea got lost in the bureaucratic enthusiasm.

sigh

So, if one were to... let's say... consider an act of tyranny for freedom.... Could one sense an action similar to the Boston Tea Party? What costumes to wear though? Gore masks? EPA enviro. outfits? I know someone could come up with a great one.

this just hit me. Ben Franklin's (SATIRE) essay on day light saving. A kick in the pants to read.

Will we be that far off from Big Brother taxing/fining those who turn on a light whilst the sun is up?

http://www.webexhibits.org/daylights...franklin3.html

"I believe all who have common sense, as soon as they have learnt from this paper that it is daylight when the sun rises, will contrive to rise with him; and, to compel the rest, I would propose the following regulations; First. Let a tax be laid of a louis per window, on every window that is provided with shutters to keep out the light of the sun.

Second. Let the same salutary operation of police be made use of, to prevent our burning candles, that inclined us last winter to be more economical in burning wood; that is, let guards be placed in the shops of the wax and tallow chandlers, and no family be permitted to be supplied with more than one pound of candles per week.

Third. Let guards also be posted to stop all the coaches, &c. that would pass the streets after sunset, except those of physicians, surgeons, and midwives.

Fourth. Every morning, as soon as the sun rises, let all the bells in every church be set ringing; and if that is not sufficient?, let cannon be fired in every street, to wake the sluggards effectually, and make them open their eyes to see their true interest. "

I originally tried putting these bulbs all through my house. Not because I'm green, but because I wanted to save money on my electric bill.

My wife initially thought they looked ugly. Especially in fancier light fixtures. But I guess she got used to them.

However, they do not work everywhere. They don't work well with dimmer switches. And the dimmer switch will kill them quickly. Also they will work in cold places like the garage, but they will die quickly there too.

So I still have regular light bulbs in one fixture on a dimmer switch, the garage lights and the outside lights. Unless they make better CFLs, I guess we might have to start hoarding old bulbs for the places that you cannot use the CFLs.

A lot of the ones I put in would only fit in certain fixtures, not all.

They take a while to start and once they die, I end up with standard light bulbs.

They do not like vibration and dimmers seem to make them nuts.

I think this guy makes some great points.

I tried 4 that they left in a bag hanging on my gate and they won't even fit in my bathroom bar lights. Also I didn't like the amount of light and all 4 burned out after about three weeks. And I forgot to call the local hazardous Waste people to come change them out.

I've put them in my drop lights - and they survive the drop !!

I used to go through bulbs often - every bump of the light and the old bulb would break the filament. I replaced a std. bulb with a CFL and a while later the spring clamp slipped and the light hit the floor. Dented the rim of the light but the bulb survived and is still in there now months later. I changed all my drop light bulbs to CFL's and I've not had to replace one since then.

Doug,

If you should ever break one don't forget to notify the HazMat team, the NRC, and your local Fire Department that you are starting a hazardous waste clean up.
