9-year-old is banned from mound for too-fast fastball
By Associated Press
Tuesday, August 26, 2008

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Jericho Scott’s fastball - clocked at 40 mph - is so nasty the 9-year-old is banned from taking the mound.

The Youth Baseball League of New Haven told his coach that the boy could not pitch anymore. When Jericho took the mound anyway last week, the opposing team forfeited the game, packed its gear and left, his coach said.

Officials for the 3-year-old league, which has eight teams and about 100 players, said they will disband Jericho’s team, redistributing its players among other squads, and offered to refund $50 sign-up fees to anyone who asks for it.

The controversy bothers Jericho, who says he misses pitching.

“I feel sad,” he said. “I feel like it’s all my fault nobody could play.”

“I think it’s discouraging when you’re telling a 9-year-old you’re too good at something,” said his mother, Nicole Scott. “The whole objective in life is to find something you’re good at and stick with it.”

What the hell. That is a bunch of BS. I would be very upset. Are they going to ban the kid who runs too fast and the other kids can't throw him out? What about the kid who always knocks the ball into the outfield and they can't throw it in without relaying the ball? Some people are better at things than others and they will excel at it. Instead of teaching these kids to give up when someone is better, they need to teach them to win, they need to work harder, and work as a team to beat the other team. Quite often when you have a prodigy, the team tends to lean on that player and they do not act as a team.

I read that and couldn't believe it. So he has a great arm for his age. If nothing else then let him move up into the next higher league. And some of the pitchers in the Little League World series threw that fast or faster.

Ahh the poor baby everyone can't win if someone is too good at the game.

That is TOTAL BS. What if they threw out the babe for hitting too many home runs. What kind of crap is that.

This crap that everyone has to win is total BS. Is that what these people really want to teach our children? If you work very hard and practice the piano every day for three hours while your other classmates are pissing off, they will throw you out of the orchestra. Good grief......

Buzz,

I didn't go to Snopes because that was the first big headline with his picture that I saw in my news module on my home page when I logged on this morning. I have a Reuters news feed on my home page and they are about as accurate as the others. Don't believe everything you see until it is verified.

Just kidding about Snopes ol' buddy. But I agree with others that society is surely becoming way too pussified when an over achiever is hamstrung to allow the slowpoke whiners to keep up. That sort of forced equalization by lowering the high standard instead of bringing up the lower end is exactly what sucks about Marxist or communist systems.

Kids need to learn how to lose as well how to win. I am grateful I grew up when I did. Rode my bike all over town. Was home when it started to get dark. If you fell down, you just got up. In the 50's I was considered husky. Hell now I would be skinny....WHINERS!

lest we forget, it was about a year ago when a family decided to sue an aluminum bat manufacturer, the store, the team, and Little League for their child getting beamed in the chest.

Thank goodness for the fear of litigiousness.

I feel sorry for the kid, but I honestly don't think I want my 9 yr old kid on the receiving end of wild pitch. 90 MPH in the cage is not something to be taken lightly, even as a grown adult.

If he doesn't loose it, this publicity will get him places. There are enough fanatics to not let this talent slide. It wouldn't surprise me if some Minor League will probably pick him up just for PR ticket sales. What a marketing deal this could be.

I read a couple of articles before I started this thread, and they all said the 9 year old's fastball is 40 MPH. I never saw anything about 90 MPH.

If a 9 year old was pitching a 90 MPH fastball from the 46 foot little league distance from the mound to home plate, even a major league player could not hit his pitch. And he would already be under contract to some major league team!

Like Ron said, move him up. Either way, It's going to be interesting to see where this kid goes.

In our league (Eastern League, Huntsville), a 9 year old throwing 40 would be considered good. But we have some who throw faster than that. If I were that coach, I'd say screw the park and head out for travel ball.

Hey it is simple, don't punish the kids who are good at what they do.

If you can't stand the fire, get your butt out of the kitchen!

If a parent thinks their son is not capable of hitting the ball they should probably take the kid back home, stop off and get him a McDonald's hamburger with fries and a shake and sit him back in front of the TV with a video game. That will make him a good productive citizen. NOT!

Good grief .......

I have often wondered about that phrase.

Is there really some thing that can be grief and be good.

Like army intelligent. A complete oxymoron, yet used freely without thought of what is being said.

So, I ask you, is there such a thing as "good grief"?

Tru,

Unlike Military Intelligence which there is no explanation for, I do believe in some cases there can be Good Grief. For example a person going to pieces and holding everything in until it drives them insane such as over the loss of a loved one instead of showing any grief or emotion. In a case like that where the grief would relieve the stress and let a person start to get on with their lives I believe the term Good Grief could be used.
