Big Dog
Wow, a dog I don't have to replace every 10-12 years.

It IS amazing! I almost felt sorry for it when the guy kick-shoved it. Didn't you? Now that is weird.

I was thinking that all they now have to do is teach it how to kick, then the guy behind it wouldn't be so brave.

I saw a shorter version of that video about a year ago. At that time they said they had to work out some software error routines yet and also they were going to concentrate on making it quieter. For military use, they were optimistic and said that it could be ready for deployment in as little as 5 years.

Can you imagine a thousand of these things sitting at idle on some battle line, say the Pakistan border area? Each with a picture of Bin Laden burned into its memory? Put a pig head on each one for added effect (ok, that was unnecessary). Two 50 Cal automatics. Two Javelin Missiles.
Or put them on the outskirts od Sadr City. OMG! The sheer shock effect would drive people (the bad guys) nuts. Each one programmed to blow itself up when downed (like Predator, but no so big).
What about that lobster looking thing? That would be an awesome cave buster.
And if some think the military is not looking... think again. Everything is going unmanned, including now, the man.

Just the noise and appearance of that robot would scare the $hit out of most of our current "enemies".
WOW. Just strap a 50 mm gun to its back and watch out!

Mike,
The program is funded by DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Project Agency). This is a defense project plain and simple.
I believe the initial intent of this is to be a pack mule in mountainous terrain were conventional vehicles cannot go and you have to have an animal currently. A robot won't get spooked by gunfire and run away with all your spare ammunition. Having an advanced attack version would be the next step albeit not far behind.

Yeah, right. Pack mule. You go on thinking that whilst I am mounting Javelin Missiles to its sides. When you see Big Dog launching the Javelin on the evening news, tell yourself it just farted.

Wow, Now that is impressive. I could not believe t did not fall down when walking on the ice. It reacted just like a human would.... Truly amazing
I can see a stealh version coming with battery packs, or a small nulcear power source. Send it into battle and when it gets wounded in combat ----Poof--- (small mushroom cloud in the sky)
At least they will be easy to find

It'd be pretty easy to mount a 22-cal gyro stabilized and independently tracking midi on it. Kick and have that thing pointing at you.

Reminds me of the unmaned Predator Drone planes the military uses. First it was recon with a camera, then someone said, "Hey, lets put a missle on it."

Joe, you know something we don't? Spill the beans!
Pack mule my other arse. Thats what the military needs, a noisy, multi-million dollar pack mule. Unless it can be made quite, recon is out too. I would LOVE to see it react to the kick of a big gun.

Nothing directly, just inferring from what I learned in my former life. One thing I learned was when you see everything, you can start to see the pattern the military uses for development and deployment. I used to have a Top Secret SCI clearance and I worked with a bunch of different stuff (all of it after deployment, in service, but you can see the pattern when you look at it).
What I remember from the first time I saw this is that the primary objective for the next phase is to make it quiet. Obviously they need to make it quiet to make it useful for the troops in any actual mission. If nothing else it is too distracting. What I see is them making it quiet and then deploying it on a trial basis. While they are proving that out, the weapons based platform will be in heavy testing. At about the time the trial for a pack mule is concluding the weapons ready option will be ready for testing and deployment. What the public sees is that once it is deployed, it has weapons. My guess is 10 years from now, these things will be common in all ground divisions in a myriad of different configurations.
Just my opinion, I haven't been around any classified information for over 10 years now. I am basing it on my experiences.
