I'm a firm believer in personal freedom and responsibility. Sometimes that puts me on the liberal side of things, sometime on the conservative.
Perhaps there is hope for you, too...

I know the objection to mandatory service is that it imposes upon an individuals freedom; but perhaps it would serve a stark reminder that freedom is not free.

I have no doubt that it would. But my only concern is , "Is the price worth it?" Maybe it is and I am against it stupidly. I am willing to admit that is a very distinct possibility.
One thing is for sure, this is the first political thread that hasn't dove into name calling and yelling. Actually an intelligent conversation.

Have an "exit exam" before entering the next grade of school. No more high school "grads" with a sixth-grade education.

Here's one for you.
The post office should reduce mail delivery to twice weekly, drop carriers to half present levels and re-staff the post offices (been in one lately?).
Excess personel will be provided financial packages to ease transition to public sector jobs.
If your sending anything via US mail your not in any rush anyway... Email has effectively killed off the postal service so why keep funding this dinosaur.

i do believe the us post offices are self funded, meaning tax dollars don,t go there. however it could save us postage.

Steve,
I'd also add that the use and consumption of alcohol or drugs at any time will also exempt you from any public assistance programs. If you got the money to buy it you don't need money from me.
