Pretty much saw it coming. It was just a matter of time. As an organization they were unable to put a consistent top finishing car on the track for years. After 10 seasons of 0 wins, with only a handful of top 10s, the writing was on the wall. The new generation of fans do not know and understand the legacy and what Petty Enterprises did for the sport, back when it really was Stock Car racing.

Yea, it really tells my age when I miss the Pettys, Earnhearts, Pearson, Ned Jarrett, Buddy Baker and the rest that drove actual cars made by the car companies. I like the shows where they have a bunch of the old drivers sitting around talking about when they were driving.
One of my favorites is Ned Jarrett telling about buying a new 1957 Ford to race at Daytona, but he never had enough money to cover the check so he wrote it late Friday afternoon so they couldn't get it to the bank. Then he took the car to Daytona and he had to win both races to have the money to cover the check. One of his crew wrapped the steering wheel with friction tape and did it the wrong way. He won the first race but his hands were cut so bad they had to take him to a hospital and have them stitched up. He said he didn't know what to do as he couldn't drive, and I believe it was Buddy Baker that told him he would drive the car and he won the 2nd race, so Ned raced back home and was at the bank when it opened Monday morning to deposit the money to cover that check. And Dale Earnheart telling how he used to hide in the trunk of his race car so the people he owed money to couldn't find him.

Good answer but don't you think the R would better fit Reporters as that is all they are now. Listen to an interview and all you hear is 5 minutes of thanking everyone that can remember and telling what a great race and car they had. Ant those are the ones that only finished 1 lap down.
Now this was when it was actually Stock Car Racing: !967 Plymouth.
The link worked great. I watched that race and thought for sure he was going to be really badly hurt. They had an interview with him in the hopsital with his wife and she had wanted him to quit racing and he had promised her that when it wasn't fun he would. Right on TV she very sacarstically said, "Well are we still having fun?" I will put the video in this post for you.
Was fun to watch.... but old "stock" just wasn't gettin it done.
If the new type stock cars were not called stock cars..what would you call them?. Perhaps Modern Stock Race Cars, Stock Class race Cars, or just Bad to the Bone Big Old Hot Rods. I really don't giva a damm...NASCAR will always be cool no matter what they race. Maybe someday they will be racing "Smart Cars" with benefits.
Since the cars neither resemble any production car or the car companies have nothing at all to do with their construction, are wider and larger, and are hand built by the teams to NASCARs design, I would in no way relate them to stock. Maybe call them NASCAR Specialty Cars or something. I still like the short track racing but find the rest just a boring high speed parade and watch the LeMans series and other road races more when they are on. I also get tired of watching at least 1/3rd of every race under a caution flag so they can get in a bunch of extra commercials. I may watch the Daytona 500 but am not at all excited about it. I will watch what they show of the Sebring 24 hour race.
All I do is copy what CW and and Jamo have taught me. Then I try to pass it on to anyone that isn't sure. On the All Cobra Talk Forum, pinned to the top is a lot of excellent examples of how to do pictures and add these videos that CW spent a lot of time laying out the steps for plus pictures to show what he was talking about. When I started on here I had trouble just posting let alone doing pictures and stuff. Jamo led me through the process of a lot of the picture stuff plus tags. With the new Software that Brent put in the last new servers everything is much easier than it used to be. So all the credit for anything that I try to help anyone with should go to CW and Jamo.
And NO this is not an attempt to suck up to the moderators. I just feel that the people who actually taught me should get credit, not me.
Just wanted to say i'm sorry you are loosing interest in Nascar racing,as that is what i've been doing for the past 30 odd years,10 with a powerhouse team.Please understand,Nascar runs the game,we just bring the people and the cars per their rules,please don't blame us,we're just working in a sport that we love trying to make a living just like you.There are rules and regulations everywhere we go in life,some we like some we don't.Nascar makes the rules we just try to play by them,yea we could just pack up our stuff and go home because we are not happy with the rules,but where would be then,even worse off,more guys out of work.We were very fortunate,we only lost 35 employees between 5 Cup,4 Nationwide,1 Truck and 3 satelite teams in our organization.If you are a true fan you'll stick it out.We've been thru tough times before and we came back.BTW, i do remember the good old days,the first race i worked was the '76 Daytona 500,i was with a nobody team but i'm sure everybody remembers the Petty-Pearson crash on the last lap.

I am not blaming the teams or anyone but French and his monopoly for what has happened. And to be honest, NASCAR was always my 2nd choice for racing as I grew up on road racing. And belive me,I know how hard it is now in this day of mega bucks to get sponsors and keep any team together. As I said, I still enjoy the short track races because I feel the driver and car setup has more to do than with who can get out in front.
And I do remember the Petty/Pearson crash and the Yarborough/Allison fight alongside the track. We are even losing the short track Saturday night racers around here because of the economy. This is a small area and when they shut down the logging industry years ago they basically killed it. Now stores are closing on a weekly basis and they can soon advertise it as a ghost town.

I too was a huge fan and have some great memories. In 1992 "The King" was retiring and every track was holding events for his last race. Hooters was my sponsor at the time for drag racing and sent me to Atlanta to see the race. Alan Kulwicki drove for Hooters and won the race/points at that event that was also Richards TRUE last race.
I was in the infield as Kyle petty was crashed but returned to run the final laps with his Dad. Kyle was black flagged for not being able to run the minimum speed but refused to leave the track. I heard the radio chatter going back n forth as the Officials asked, urged, threatened and then gave up getting Kyle off the track as his Dad ran his very last laps in NASCAR. Kyle did get to run laps as the King finished his. Alan K. won the race and then did his famous Polish Victory lap. What a memory and just one of many that week. Now I give any comp. tickets away as I do not agree with the imports in Nascar.

I have lived all over the country and in nearly every major area of California, but I do like it up here the best. We are just on the fringe of being high enough to have snow and do have some very cold weather, but the mountains and not so many people make it nice. The lake is a big mud puddle right now as it is the lowest it has been since they filled it and we aren't getting any rain at all this year again. They have shut off many areas as they don't want boats hitting rocks and stuff that is just barely covered right now.
When will you be leaving to go to Daytona? I know they said something about cutting back on speed week but never heard the whole report.
