Mike,
That wasn't bad at all for your first time in those conditions. We can't run up the canyon walls here, but I hike several miles back up into some of them and they are over a mile deep and trying to climb out by going up the side is a very long and tiring day. Mostly loose shale and very steep. You grab a bush or something, pull yourself a foot or so up and then slide back half that distance before you can get hold of something else to pull on. I have spent three hours hiking up one of these canyons along the river, and 5 1/2 hours climbing the side to get to an old fire road that goes along near the top of the wall.
But there is a lot of history back in those places where no one goes. That stuff had to have been hauled in by men and mules in the 1800s.

Ah, Steve, very funny!
Lets see if we can keep the thread open after this. This is TRULY fuzzy logic:
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,517137,00.html
95% percent of people who go to Miss America shows support gay marriage? Really? I think it is time to end the show. If a contestant HAS to be pro gay marraige, then its no longer the Miss America Paegent. As for Perez Hilton, he asked for it and he got it. Way to go Miss California.
20 years ago, such a question would NEVER have been asked. And now gays want to hijack one of the the most American of American traditions (other than baseball, but thats next) and turn it into a platform for "gay rights"????
Unbelievable
Mike

Gee Mike - I thought for sure I would be on your ignore list by now...
Maybe my next comments will get me there.
Before you do though - congrats on the trek. The extent of my mountain climbing these days is getting my butt up out of the valley at Laguna Seca (and only when I go there instead of some other vintage race) to the parking area at the top of the hill. Granted I've got 40 pounds of camera gear, water, and reference stuff in a backpack, but it WAAAAYY pales in comparison to what you did the last couple of years.
Anyway...
The Miss USA event is a privately owned and operated and they are free to decide whatever criteria they want for winners to be picked. If they want to discriminate for gays - that is their choice.
The Boy Scouts of America are also privately operated, though they get public assistance, and they discriminate against gays (as well as atheists). Should they be forced to drop the 'America' part from their name as well?
Steve

No Steve, you will not end up on my ignore list. Its a VERY short list. Just ranters and thread closers go there. Not seeing that stuff helps keep me on an even keel.
You are correct, Miss America is private as well as BSA. BSA should not accept funds. I have not kept up with that issue, so I know not where I speak. Its just that some very basic "institutions" are being "subjugated" to "the cause". Soon Miss America contestants will be screened on matters of public policy. Like any of them really know what public policy is! Was that sexist? A stereotype? Yup. And it saddens me. If Apple Pie could speak (and had a pulpit) it too would find itself being subjugated to the cause. Perhaps baseball is next. Speaking of, what is up with the BoSox? I got my jacket out and wear it everyday (till it gets hot, which should be any day now).
