Does any one know how the standard of 35.5mpg was arrived at ? Other than someone in the Gov liking the number.

Ok even if for the sake of argument we are able to achieve athe new CAFE and emisson standards (which I am skeptical of BTW), and save all of the carbon based fuel, whatt will our Dear leader(s) up in DC do about the corresponding drop in gas taxes?? hmmm.... I guess they will follow their normal course and raise taxes to make it revenue neutral.:CRY: So then BO's claim that owners of these fine small cars "breaking Even" after 3 years might be a tad unrealistic.

Perhaps start a thread and list all the great stuff your man BO is doing for you; the hand outs, etc. to all his government worker types, like you. You know, most of the posters here try to avoid the liberal view, day after day - help us out. |

Jack the price up too high, demand drops, producers have over-flowing storage tanks. Someone caves and drops their price, others under-cut them... Just a market blip that occured right around an election and if it stays down we'll forget about drilling for our own sources (again), that is until the next time. But we're well on our way down the path to fantasy land banking on non-existant energy alternatives to save our way of life instead of building our reserves "just in case" the miracle of something more efficent than burning oil doesn't occur. Of course let's not forget the slew of base chemicals that make plastics and other products that we produce from crude oil. |
I see nothing wrong with trying to increase mileage. I had a 1972 Pontiac Grand Prix for years. The car had over 150k miles and ran good. It AVERAGED almost 22 mpg driving both city and highway. It had a 350 hp 400cid. weighed almost 4500 lbs., and the car was relatively loaded.
You want to stop buying gas from nations that support terrorism? Guess how we are going to accomplish that...and it isn't just popping a whole lot more holes in the ground. |
Timing is everything. It's not that any of us don't want the average mileage on new cars to increase, its more about announcing the higher standard now when the auto industry and the economy is in the dumper, big time. It's an overload scenario - a nightmare scenario that could have waiting a year or so. Global Warming (cap and trade) is in the same nightmare bucket - more research is needed, not regulations now.
Also, drilling more holes will not solve the problem - but it would help - using all our resources would help and if that happens and more is needed - Americans would get on board, big time. In other words, going strictly left to solve known and unknown issues is not going to get the support of those in the middle or right. |
Yeah..yeah..yeah..let me tell you how it works. During the good times, all we hear is nobody has the time to do this or that and if we do pursue something, it is going to hurt the economy. Nothing gets done. Then during the bad times, everybody says it is bad and they don't have the money and we will hurt the economy.
The economy will get better someday and by the time the car companies start working on this, the economy will probably be flourishing. Get it going now.Necessity is the mother of invention. As for the left, that is a bogus comment also. These problems have been known for years. The difference is the Republicans were accepting the campaign contributions last time, and the Dems are this time, so we get stuck listening to the left. Had the right shut their mouths and quit crying about the left all the time, maybe the left wouldn't be the only voice heard now. |

There is no reason to do anything extra when the economy is at that worst in decades, plus doing stuff that would cost taxpayers nothing - drilling for oil off shore and in Alaska would bring up the spirits of those Americans that need something to cheer about. Also, I will keep blasting the left, including you, as its deserving, fun and what I do. So, take your input and .... .. .. .... ..s. |
