U.S. to Confront, Not Board, North Korean Ships

WASHINGTON — The Obama administration will order the Navy to hail and request permission to inspect North Korean ships at sea suspected of carrying arms or nuclear technology, but will not board them by force, senior administration officials said Monday.

The new effort to intercept North Korean ships, and track them to their next port, where Washington will press for the inspections they refused at sea, is part of what the officials described as “vigorous enforcement” of the United Nations Security Council resolution approved Friday.

The planned American action stops just short of the forced inspections that North Korea has said that it would regard as an act of war. Still, the administration’s plans, if fully executed, would amount to the most confrontational approach taken by the United States in dealing with North Korea in years, and carries a risk of escalating tensions at a time when North Korea has been carrying out missile and nuclear tests.

In discussing President Obama’s strategy on Monday, administration officials said that the United States would report any ship that refused inspection to the Security Council. While the Navy and American intelligence agencies continued to track the ship, the administration would mount a vigorous diplomatic effort to insist that the inspections be carried out by any country that allowed the vessel into port.

So what is the issue? NK literally threatened to fire a missile at us when GWB was in office, and he didn't do a thing except give them aid.

Hey Bill,

I know that but he could stop lying about all he is going to do and just admit he is going to do nothing. China is the only country in the world that has any chance of ending that mess peacefully and they seem reluctant to step in. Also the Yala River border between China and N.K. has growing tensions along it and they seem to be getting worse. Hopefully some of that idiots overzealous troops will make the mistake of actually crossing into China and attacking their outpost there.

However how about this. After the sanction was put in place to stop N.K. ships and inspect their cargos, the Coward has instructed our Navy to ask the N.K. ships captain permission to board. Boy, he must have them quaking under their beds laughing at the United States. Now this news piece about how he is going to change the past pattern of just talk. LIAR!!!!

Hey Ron,
I understand your distrust for Obama, its healthy and wise to distrust any politician, they are all liars, there politicians, it's what they do! He was not my first choice for potus, but I was going to vote for anyone that was not a republican, we gave them more than enough chances to straighten things out and they went nuts on us it was a free for all to see who could steal the most from our country, I could give you a list a mile long of defense contracts that were out and out fraud against the American public.
This is why we are holding Obama's feet to the fire, as well as the rest of the democrats, it's a shame the republicans are in the midst of self destruction, I hope it ends soon they get their act together, or a third party will emerge from this and there will never be a clear majority, and if you think that there is hate and discontent now, wait till the Democrats and republicans are going after a third party, it will be chaos and nothing will get done. what both parties have to learn is the majority of Americans are centrist, neither far left, nor far right. and each side does irreparable harm to themselves for going too far in either direction.

I have absolutely no disagreement with what you just said. I am actually just disgusted and tired of what we have to choose from for the most important positions in our country. And I carry that right on down into Congress. I don't and never will vote for party politics. I think whatever is best for the country and not for one party or the other is what should be done, regardless of who proposes it.

For years I was the same way, didn't vote for one party or the other it was what they stood for, but after Dumb and Dumber had it for the last 8 years I had to do something and figured the minority party was more likely to listen, so far that's not working out, but they will learn by the next election.

I only voted this time because I wanted to keep my record of having voted in every election intact. Are you saying that you too believe that Obama means to take away the vote from American citizens? Do you think if I lived in the US, I would think there was even a remote possibility of that being on his agenda?
I am not criticizing for the sake of being a jerk - I am genuinely surprised that a rational, educated person would be that paranoid. So much so, in fact that I don't think you guys actually believe stuff like that at all. I think (hope) that the dislike for the man and his party and their associated policies is so intense that statements like that are a deliberate spouting of propoganda that you know to be false or at least unrealistic. My point then is that once people choose to indulge solely in negative rhetoric for its own sake, then there is little hope for civil debate or conversation as would normally occur in a "lounge".
The net result is that most threads posted here are doomed to deteriorate into polarized camps telling each other to piss off because the intention from the get go is to validate personal convictions and denigrate all others at the expense of everything else - including truth, honesty and general rationality.
Of course all of what I just typed will be instantly (and conveniently) interpreted as liberal, lefty, Obamamania B.S., but the truth is I feel that way about blind, unreasoning rhetoric no matter who is spewing it and regardless of who or what the target is.
