HOLY CRUMPLE ZONE, BATMAN!
A $23000 hood?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?
I didn't think even Shel' would drive that hard into anybody's rectum!
But a friend who owns a new Supersnake says he was quoted $1500 on the plastic side emblems when his were stolen....had some made at a CNC shop out of aluminum for $200.

I am guessing that this must be one of the new GT-500KRs that he is building. All of those prices are ridiculous. I have looked at a couple here and actually thought about getting one, but if that is the price for minor repairs I don't want anything to do with it. And I have never heard of having to return the parts. What are they going to do with them? Straighten them out and use them on new cars they build.

This is an attempt (albeit a bit lame) to ensure that there are no faux KRs on the road. The inflated parts prices and requirements to return damaged parts are all deterrents to keep a bunch of knock-off cars from appearing, thus reducing the value of the real ones. And in the process, SAI benefits enormously.

Ok, that part makes sense, I guess, but for a person that has one to have to pay that much for parts is ridiculous. I know you can't find a 1965 Mustang around here as they were all cloned into GT-350s. Also with the amount of the new ones being built, I think it will be a long time before anyone gets the prices they are thinking about. Also from reading about the various problems they keep posting on the Shelby site, I would be a little hesitant to buy a new one right now. There area few around here and they look and sound great but I see one of them has the cheap vinyl stripes already starting to peel away from the front of the hood. I believe if it was mine I would have them taken off and painted on. I also think the guy told me they were installed by the dealer.

The first reason I wouldn't buy one because the prices are tremendously over-inflated and they will end up falling like a rock. The second reason is crap like this parts debacle. The last reason is for that kind of money, I don't want to be driving something the captain of the local high school football team, 33 years my junior, is driving. I'll take Dean Lampe's GT-40 thank you very much.

It won't take long until actuaries drive the insurance through the roof. The specialty companies like Hagerty will learn of these costs quick if they have not already.
There is actually a guy that is doing a blog with collected pics of wrecked-new style Shelbys most all of which are totaled.
What's important to remember is this car was just skinned up. So pity the unknowing guy that jumps on a builder-only to get it home and have to tell his wife and maybe his banker that it can't be affordably fixed and it is just a big paper weight.

I would like to see someone with cubic dollars take one of the 45 IaCOCCA Mustangs to SAI to see if they would do the $35K Super Snake suspension and the 725 hp drivetrain upgrades. Maybe even some stripes for added insult.
To upstage the chicken farmer's Super Snake version would surely PO the old man.

Shelby strikes again...
I have been following the KR Mustang repair thread with great interest.
Glad you posted the link as I believe all Shelby fans, owners and potential owners should read it and recognize that this is not a one time special condition but rather just a continuation of the typical Shelby greed.
It is so sad that a man with so much talent in many ways is one of the most greedy, self serving men alive. He can be a great and wonderful friend, but if you don't agree with him and/or give him all your money, he will turn on you and most likely sue you. He will long be remembered for what he has done, and to how many people....

What's gonna happen is this will spread thru the insurance industry sooner or later and when that happens NO ONE will insure them, leaving the owners high and dry!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Much in the same way many companies are refusing to insure replica Cobras............

David, would that not also result in the cars being just about impossible to sell? Can you imagine calling your insurance company to get a quote for the new GT 500 KR that you are about to buy? You are told that either they will not insure it at all or they will charge $$$$$ with a very high deductible. I think that most people would very quickly decide to buy something else. The KR's already produced will then just sit on the dealer's floor collecting dust. Due to this incident, this may already be happening.

Yes, for the few folks that WILL check into insurance before buying a KR........but a lot of folks with money will buy the car first and find out the bad news later, then have an expensive "garage queen" on their hands........
A few months ago, my 23 year old daughter just had to have a new Mustang GT, she told me she could afford the monthly note and had already spoke to a dealer about pricing and trading in her 02 Toyota...I told her to check with her insurance company before doing anything else as a new Mustang GT would be more expensive to insure than a 7 year old Toyota, well, she did, and she's still driving the Toyota!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! her insurance premium would just about double what she's paying now and that was the deal killer......not many folks have the foresight to do this beforehand!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!my daughter didn't!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It's gonna happen sooner or later, once an insurance company or two get burned on the repair bill, the word will spread thru the insurance industry like a California wildfire and it will not take long for them to figure out insuring a handful of these cars is just not worth it.................
Also another classic example of CS having a good thing going and then shooting himself in the foot!!!!!!!! I kinda hope those new KR's either sit at CS's place in Vegas or rot on the showroom floors........

I guess that we may be witnesses to the first such incident. I am sure that the insurance companies are all becoming aware of this now.
I also wonder if CS even knows what is going on these days or if it is others trying to take advantage of his name.

I guess we're kinda in on the ground floor so to speak...........
As for CS, I've often wondered just how much of this nonsense is his doings/ideas and how much is his staff???????
At his age and health, I wonder just how much input he still has in the day to day operations of his companies and how much he leaves to the folks in charge?????

I just checked the original story via the link and there isn't anything new so this continues to drag out.
I mentioned this situation to my daughter last night and her first reply was "was it written in the original sales contract that damaged parts had to be returned before replacement parts would be shipped?". That is a good point as the only parts that are normally returned are those that are replaced on warrantee.

Actually it would be a toss up bewteen who would own the damaged parts, #1.CS or the #2. owner of the car or the #3. insurance company paying the bill?????? Peronally I think #2 owns them!!!!!!!!!!!! He bought an d paid for them when he bought the car!!!!!!!!!!!!
Many times an insurance company will pick up damaged parts such as wheels/bumpers that are being replaced but have minor scrathes to the chrome or aluminum finish.......
I would not think CS has any rights to any parts, damaged or not, once the car is sold, those parts belong to the owner, now what he's doing is with holding selling/shipping new parts to someone untill he gets the old parts.... Legally, I don't think he would have much of a chance in court if it ever went that far, but that's only MY opinion..........Once a car is repaired,I would think the old damaged parts still belong to the owner of the car (again IMHO) but 99.9% of folks surely don't want to bring home a truck load of damaged parts, so the body shop disposes of them as they see fit, but they will gladly give them to the owner to haul off, saves them the trouble.........
Some parts such as bumper covers and bumpers will have a "core charge" so they are picked up by the manufacter of those parts...
As a side note, since I'm in that business, I checked and the GT-500 body parts are avaliable from Ford and do carry a Ford part number, down to the stripes..( the hood list price is about $1,200.00 and the entire stripe kit is about 1/3 of what I would have expected, most of the GT-500 specific parts are very reasonably priced!!!!!!!!!) The GT-500's were made entirely buy Ford and all CS did was lend his name, now the CS GT and KR's are a different story, they are Mustangs modified by CS in much the same way he did it in the 60's........He gets his body and mechanical parts from whatever vendor/source he wants to and that leaves Ford out of the equation altogther!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
it's going to be very interesting to see how this plays out, and I'll be watching.........

The original story has an update including a picture of the box used to ship the $20,000 hood which was damaged during transit. A replacement hood is supposed to have been shipped but it hasn't been received. What a screwup!!!!!
EDIT: I just went back and the KR owner has now gone on line and is he ever pissed. He has come out calling SAI a bunch of liars, etc, etc. It is worth reading.

Depending on how your view of the web site displays on your screen the owner of the wrecked GT500KR has responded on page 7. His handle is "The GT500KR Owner". Yeah, he is PISSED!
Autoblog reports that Shelby has lowered the price from $20 or $23,000 (depending on how you calculate shipping, markup, etc) to $9,700. The owner claims that's a lie! By the time the hood is done with markup's, etc. the new price is actually $14,000.
3 or 4 months now, the car still sit's and waits for a resolution to this mess. SAI says the hood was shipped, but offers no tracking number to verify. It seems that the hood was NOT shipped after all. Speculation by the owner that SAI wants the old hood back so they can repair it (bondo time) and send it back (for $14,000). The information does indeed sound accurate, not just rumor.
$630 for the hood pin's, by the way, must be tripple chrome over gold.
