How did you mount your rear license plate?

Need some advice on how everyone is installing their rear license plate. Reason is the Texas plate will not fit between the license lamp fixture and the trunk handle. We ended up mounting it on the bumper rails and really don't like it. It appears Midstates did not take this into consideration when designing the spacing. Any suggestions from fellow Midstates owners?

Tag bracket

I don't have a Midstate but I have made stainless tag bracket for a few of our Cobras. Mine is a Lone Star and I made one for Mike's FFR and Hurricane. I use angle and/ or flat stock. Weld up what we need and polish till it shines like chrome.:)
Never had one of these to break and drop a tag.

I just did a little trimming on the plate itself - got the idea from Bob's car...

Mine is trimmed like ZIPZIP,s. It is not the Texas license plate, its the spacing between latch and light. See my gallery.

The reason that the plate doesn't fit is because the original cobra is european and their plates are much narrower, most cobra replicas are keeping the original lookand therefore U.S. plates are to big to fit. Finishline sells a plate hanger that is angled out to clear the trunk handle.

My midstates (built in 1992) is done just like zipzip. Bolts go through the trunk lid. Notched the plate to fit over the handle as shown in zipzip response. This is mor like the oroginals than the lonestar above where they have a large bulge, higher up on the lid.

just notch the plate and you'll be OK.

I knew you guys would recommend the trimming solution which I did think real hard about already. We were hoping someone had figured out another clever way. Never know, we do have some clever folks out there.

Thanks to all for your suggestions. Really like your bracket, Dwight. Really sharp design. Well we will be thinking about this some more as we would really like to get this plate off the bumper rail.

Finishline offers a bracket that may help.

I trimmed mine top and bottom.

Mine is off to the left. I didn't like it under the trunk handle.

What type of fiberglass did you use to rework the tail light area?

I took a better picture of the tag bracket today.

I took the handle off the trunk, drilled a hole in the plate and mounted the handle throught the plate.

GlynMeek 09-18-2007 07:56 PM

Dwight...just regular old fiberglass sheet and resin. Cut away ALL the light area and then laid down multiple layers from the inside until it was all done, then sanded inside and outside and smoothed with 'bondo' filler.

Of course, you have to add a 'hidden' trunk pull then to open the trunk!
