2015 Cruise being planned
Wanted to get some ideas from you on places to cruise. The Gateway Cobra Club and a few members from Texas plan to go to Deadwood, S.D. in July of 2015 and on the way back, we plan to go through Boulder to visit the Shelby museum there. We plan to arrive in Boulder on a Thursday and want to plan a cruise for Friday leaving out of Boulder. Looking at the map, it appears Estes Park is the obvious choice for making/planning a day cruise. Other ideas or thoughts on what not to miss while we are there? We plan to leave Saturday after visiting the Shelby museum.

Leading south out of the Estes Park valley, a portion of the Peak to Peak Scenic Byway (aka Colorado Highway 7) crests at charming Lily Lake and offers tremendous views of Mount Meeker, Longs Peak and Twin Sisters. You'll pass the stone building of Saint Catherine of Siena Chapel, circa 1935. Locals also refer to it as St. Malo Church or Chapel on the Rock. The road borders Rocky Mountain National Park, past its Wild Basin Entrance and through Allenspark, where Highway 7 cuts east. Although the route veers off the Peak to Peak, eventually connecting with Highway 36 in Lyons, it shows the diverse scenery of the area-from massive rock walls and delicate sandstone spires to bubbling rivers and mountain meadows dotted with elk or deer-before dropping into mountain-fringed Estes Park.
TRAIL RIDGE ROAD - ROCKY MOUNTAIN NATIONAL PARK
The bulk of Trail Ridge Road, the highest continuous paved road in the United States, lies within the bounds of Rocky Mountain National Park, but it begins in Estes Park. Pick up Hwy. 36 (aka Moraine Avenue) and follow it west into the national park past Beaver Meadows Visitor Center. You'll pass Deer Mountain and the intersection with Bear Lake Road. At Deer Ridge Junction, pick up Hwy. 34. The route climbs from 7,800 feet to more than 12,000 feet at its highest point. It passes through a variety of habitat, from mountain meadows and woodlands to well above treeline into the alpine tundra. You can turn around at the Alpine Visitor Center or transform the scenic drive into a day-long road trip to Grand Lake, and back. Because of the elevation gain, Trail Ridge Road is open from Memorial Day until late-September to mid-November, depending on snowfall.Trail Ridge Road officially opened for the season on Friday, May 22, 2014, however periodic closures are possible due to changing weather and snow conditions. This is my stomping ground. We lived in Lyons for 18 years before moving to Vegas (our CO house is still for sale  )
After the museum visit the best way is to from Boulder to Estes. From Boulder/Museum take Hwy 119 through Boulder Canyon to Nederland and then to the Peak-to-Peak (hwy 72 to hwy 7) to Estes. For the return you have three choices:
Estes to Loveland on Hwy 34 Big Thompson Canyon. The narrows sounds great with a Cobra open and side pipes. I can attest to this as it was my favorite drive.
Estes to Lyons via Allenspark (back on the P-P part of the way and then down the south St. Vrain canyon to Lyons (note, you're doubling back)
Estes to Lyons on Hwy 36.
All of these roads (Hwy 7, Hwy 34, Hwy 36) have been rebuilt after the 9/11/13 flash floods that wiped them all out. 36 just reopened new but alas, I didn't get a chance to drive it. Hwy 34 (Big Thompson) flooded out very close to when it did in 1976. By the time you go the road beds should be clear of construction debris.

Tim, let us know when you plan to be in Boulder and maybe some of the Mile Hi Cobra Club can meet you there. BTW Shelby museum is only open on Saturdays. Dick Thompson

Well, you have a little longer...we've had to postpone until 2016 at this time. We're headed to Tail of the dragon instead in September 2015.

We are now targeting this to be in September 2017. Anyone know when the big Sturgis bike week is? 3 maybe 4 cars from St Louis, anyone else is welcome. Plenty of notice, so no excuses  |
