Post Reconstructed Title???

I looked at a Cobra the other day here in Texas that was last titled in Minnesota. The title had a "Reconstructed" stamp on it. The owner told me, "that's just how they title kit cars in Minnesota." Do y'all have any experience with this or knowledge to whether or not this is true?

Thanks guys!

I would check with DMV where the title was issued. Reconstructed usually means it was rebuilt as a total loss salvage car. The word for new cars would be special construction. Be very careful. You could have a "cobra shell" on top of a wrecked something else. Check the VIN.

Minnesota has a reconstructed/special construction form and title procedure for all kit (replica) cars. To see the form (pdf format) directly off the Minnesota state MVS web site CLICK HERE

Bill,

So if it was registered new in Minnesota as a reconstructed kit car, how would you get the title transferred to another state where they do not classify kit or replica cars as reconstructed. The last thing you would want to happen is for it to be titled as a salvage or rebuilt title just because of changing states.

Thanks,
Austin

I would ask the seller to scan the title and registration and send it to you. Take it to the DMV and ask them if they have any concerns and what the process would be. Ask the seller why he did not register or title the car in Texas.

Some states classify them as "special construction", others will continue the branded title as a "reconstructed". Some will issue you a regular title. Knowing how one state will handle another states "reconstructed title" is not my area of expertise, as there are too many variables and factors that can and usually do happen with such things. Texas recently (a year or two ago) reclassified kit cars, so I am not certain how they will handle an out of state title such as this. You can assist the next people though by documenting your experience here.
