Southern Connecticut Ride - 10/11/08

Hey Guys:
Tomorrow is Sunday, October 5th, 2008. The weather is supposed to be dry and in the 60s. Is there any interest out there to do a fall ride? I'm pretty flexible, I can be at the Fish Tail in Madison, the Aspen Gardens in Litchfield or the Sycamore in Bethel for coffee and/or lunch. Are there any Cobra owners out there who feel like driving their cars before the weather goes to s&*t?

Rick, Joe G., Mike, Todd, anybody? Let me know, I know it's late notice but I thought I would give it a try. Noreen and I will be out there either way.

Bob

Maybe count me in... I like the sycamore but am up for anything in Fairfield Cty.

Cashburn 10-04-2008 06:36 PM

We are all driving to Columbus Circle. Why don't you join us?

MrMagoo 10-04-2008 06:39 PM

OK, sounds good, where is Columbus Circle? New York City Columbus Circle?

Think I'll pass on Columbus Circle, Jay. Thanks for the info.

Too late to change plans. You should schedule something a week or so ahead of time, so it can be worked out. Plenty of Cobras in southern CT...maybe a Fall foliage tour through Litchfield County or something similar.

Hey Mr. M:
We can be at the hotel (HI-HO on the sign I think) which is located at Exit 45 (Route 58) on the Merritt. What's a good time?

Let me know either way.

Hey Bob,

It's 8:00 AM here in Wilton... and it's raining. It may clear up by 11:00am or so... if so, lets meet at 11:30 at the hi-ho, and then cruise north to the sycamore.... another really good place is in Newton.. it's called the Burgeritto or something like that, right next to Cave Comics.

I'll keep checking this thread.

It does look sketchy right now but the radar provides some hope we are in the worst of it.

Hey Sean:
It's raining here in West Haven at 9:00. The radar is showing a lot of green. I wonder how the Columbus Circle ride went. I've had my car 8 years an it's never been wet, I won't change that today. I'll keep checking the radar. If it doesn't clear-up we'll have to do it another time.

Bob

On a positive note, there is some good TV today - Giants, Talladega, Red Sox.

MrMagoo 10-05-2008 07:25 AM

OK, let me know.

Update: 11:02. Not inspiring weather, but it looks like it has stopped raining. Radar looks ok. Too cold though. Lets do it some other time.

I ended up going to the Orange car show!
Your ride sounds like a nice idea, sure would be nice to have a little more warning though...do you plan on another?

Bob In Ct 10-06-2008 03:58 PM

David:
It's hard to give a lot of warning since activities with these cars tends to be weather related.

Relating to a foliage run (in the western/southern Connecticut area) I prefer to be on 5th gear roads. I like the wind going by and feeling some side force when going around the corners. Some of my favorite roads to cruise are the Merritt and Wilbur Cross Parkways, Route 63 above Litchfield and Route 254 between Litchfield and Thomaston. All of these guys are fast and smooth and have hardly a light or stop sign. I imagine Route 7 up around Lime Rock is also pretty wide open.

If anyone out there has any ideas for this coming Saturday (10-10-08) feel free to post them here. How about this loop - (starting anywhere) Route 8 to Thomaston, from there take Route 254 up to Litchfield (lunch maybe), Route 63 up to Lime Rock (lunch at the track?), Route 7 down to Danbury, Route 58 back to the Merritt (lunch at the Sycamore?), the Merritt back to route 8?

Hey Bob,
I think Sunday maybe another go at Columbus Circle. I'm in St. Louis for Saturday. But we already have 10/18 or 10/19 penciled in for a big loop up around the Lime Rock / Sharon area and back down. I think we will plan to use Route 8 for a long stretch of the drive so we can pickup the LI guys at the Bridgeport/Port Jeff Ferry.

Bob In Ct 10-06-2008 04:44 PM

The coming Sundays are bad for me. Stafford Springs is having both the Whelen Modifieds and the Busch North cars in this weekend and the following Sunday Thompson is having their Modified weekend. Both of these events are terrific and draw very big crowds. I'm always amazed at how few Cobra guys attend.

Both Saturdays work. I'll be amazed if any Long Island guys come over on the ferry since I have tried to get them to take the boat for years. Last winter Tony Aprile came up to OnTrackKarting from the Island but he drove. BTW, why is it so few Cobra guys are interested in karting? The facility in Wallingford is top shelf with fast karts (Tony, would you agree?) but I can rarely get any Cobra guys to show (even with the discount I offer).

This Cobra guy had spent many years at both Thompson and Stafford, as well as Plainville Stadium, Waterford Speedbowl and Riverside Park as both a spectator and competitor. In my opinion, the local racing scene is nothing compared to what it once was, with cookie-cutter cars, low payouts, and spoiled kiddie crashem drivers. I rarely attend any of these events anymore and instead enjoy building, maintaining and driving my Cobra. As far as the run up to Lime Rock, I'd be interested. Keep the itinerary posted.

Bob In Ct 10-06-2008 07:05 PM

I attended my first circle race at Waterford Speedbowl in the early 50s. I've been going to all kinds of racing in Connecticut ever since. While the current fleet of Busch North cars may be "Cookie-cutter", the Whelen Modifieds put on as good a show as one could find. The NEMA cars are far from "Cookie-cutter" as are the Super Modifieds which put up extremely fast times wherever they race. I guess we we got to where we are due to concerns about money and safety.

Regardless, maybe we can get something going for an upcoming weekend.

I would love to do some open road cruising with other Cobras, but Saturdays are not good, as my GF and I both work. Sundays would be great, weather permitting.

TButtrick 10-07-2008 04:14 PM

I'm open this Sat and Sun if anyone would like to cruise the foliage.

Cashburn 10-07-2008 06:02 PM

I will post more details on the Foliage Drive next week. This week we are trying to hit Columbus Circle (again) on Sunday.
