I agree that if it did not leak before then it should not leak now. That though does not mean that the transmission shop did anything wrong.
It does not cost anything to look and see what is wrong. Work on it, NO, look at it and try to figure out what is leaking, yes. Odds are the transmisson shop did not seal something or used an incorrect gasket or seal somewhere. That said, you should not have to pull the transmission out again, take the car to them complete and let them look at it. You could have damaged the rear seal installing the driveline. |
Well, if I bring my german shepherd and you two guys, we will have one hell of a posse! Let's saddle up....
|
I usually take my 12 gauge with me if I have to go back. If you need my help let me know.

I`m glad you got a new Cobra, Ed
Merry Christmas Maurice |
Ron, I distribute both C/R and National oil seals.. been to all kinds of training installing oil seals, take the tranny back, somethings wrong. Should not leak even if it had chinese seals, at least not for awhile. thats my two cents worth! ED

Ed, Thanks for the info. My impression is that the seals were incorrectly installed and the 1st seal did not look like OEM. Does your company sell/distribute Tremec 3550 seals? |

I'm surprised that the shop has not called YOU and had you come back down with the car. Word usually gets around once it's on Cobra Club.
I know there are people here that know who worked on the car and trans, and you would think these friends would call the shop and warn them of the impending doom. At least, that's what I would do if the shop owner was a personal friend of mine. It would not help the shop's rep if the name of the shop hits Cobra Club. |
Not to take a different tack, but is it possible that he overfilled the tranny and the excess oil is pushing it's way by the seal? If he saved time by adding oil on the bench and then installed it, the angle it sets in the car may cause it to overload the seal. It seems odd that 2 seals in a row should leak, unless there is a major flaw in the work.
|
Sounds like a phone call is in order. Ron said he had one mechanic remove it then took it to a trans builder and all they had to do was put it back in the car.
Sounds reasonable. |
I know this sounds stupid, but are you sure they aren't over filling it. I had the one in my Comet worked on and it started leaving puddles and I took it back twice before one of the transmission men looked at it and told me their guys were overfilling it and he drained some out, cleaned it up and I have never had a drip since. And I thought that it was coming out the tail end as the wind blew it back that way.

Ron, sorry I don't have automotive literature, I am industrial... But.. I can interchange part numbers or give me the actual size.
|
Ed...Go back to work! And Ron, what is the trans shop where you had it rebuilt telling you?
|
Ron,
A few more thoughts, after reading you replaced the seal twice, and what other variables exist. I did some checking around on some other forums about your problem. There are others with the exact same problem after replacing multiple seals. A few points from some other sites, quote...: 1. Bushing in the tail housing could be worn 2. Check the yoke and make sure it's not worn 3 Take a close look inside the yoke; make sure there isn't a small vent hole at the end of the yoke. If there is a vent hole you can take some brake cleaner and clean the inside of the yoke and blow it dry with compressed air, then make a round template out of gasket material put some black silicone on one side and carefully slide the template with screwdriver all the way in until the silicone oozes out of the hole. - Did the trans mechanic check the bushing in the rear tail housing or just replace the seal? - Did anyone check the yoke on the driveline to make sure its not worn too much? Good Luck. |
Ron,
BTW: If it is a bad tail housing bushing, there is a guy on another forum who claims the bushing can be removed without removing the transmission. He says it requires a special tool to remove it, and (apparently) the bushing is suppose to be the same size as a GM Turbo Hydromatic TH350 auto trans. Any good trans shop should know. Good Luck. |
is this the same as the 3550 output shaft ;
NATIONAL Part # 7692S More Info {Oil Seal; Acrylates / Shaft Size=1.5" Housing Bore=2.372" Outer Diameter=2.376" Width=1.458"} Tremec 3550 5 Spd. Manual Transmission |
Post his number so we can heckle him! Politely of course.

just a thought i have seen this numerous times working as a jeep tech, when you use a seal puller on a stubborn seal sometimes you put a groove in the aluminum housing if not caught before the installation of the seal the fluid will follow the groove and may possibly leak. i use a small file to remove any burrs and then put some silicone on your finger and fill the damaged area.
like i said just a thought , something you can check easily. |
