Carb improvement
Has anyone heard of a powerblast plate from Thompson Performance in Rancho Cordova? They claim it reduces throttle lag by better fuel atomization with a simple plate added to a carburetor and it's cheap. It makes sense but does it work?
Thanks for your input. |
I have heard of them, haven't tried them myself as yet.
Looks good in theory. I think the blast plate would be more beneficial when running straight or downleg boosters compared to annular boosters. I run annulars in all of mine, and I like to have my carbs calibrated to the point of running the smallest pump volume. Why run big green or pink cams, if you can get good response with white or red on the primary? |
I agree it looks like it would add some improved atomization to the primary squirter & probably give off-idle a better tip in.
I think I'll order one. Heck its only $40 bucks. At least its not like the swirl spacers they sell for Throttle bodies, lol |
That looks like it would work, sort of analogous to going from down leg to annular boosters...
$40? Sure I'll bite. Steve H SPF 1764 |

I have one. It works fine. I tuned the accelerator pump circuit with a wide band gauge. I was able to put a smaller squirter nozzle in with no ill effects.

Sounds like another "toy" I have to try ..... I have two carbs with annular boosters. One is a highly modified Holley 850 4150 with full size annulars and the other is BLP billet carb with their mini annulars . Been having some hesitation issues with both carbs from low rpm cruise while on the transition circuit only . Going up in squirter size hasn`t helped much .
I normally like to see the squirters in the 31 to 37 range on P/S . I`m not sure I understand the comment about going from downleg boosters to annulars since the boosters come into play ( on my engine ) until 2700 rpm up and if I understand what these are , they work on the accelerator pump circuit and the squirters . Just remembered that I also have access to a Pro Systems 950 HP with downleg boosters I can also try these on . Man , I hate it when someone comes up with something else for me to play with . Gaz64 .... I`ll send you a PM later as I have some questions for a fellow annular carb user and don`t want to hijack a thread . |

Anybody have a verdict on these? I understand the theory involved on them and considered getting a large quantity of them from these guys for my shop, but the price wasn't where I needed it to be so it didn't happen.

I think the product has merit, since nearly any fuel stream leaving the pump nozzle orifice gets broken up early and almost as good as the fuel emulsion leaving the booster.
The only time Holleys' intended target of the side of the booster is when the nozzle is pressurised by the pump action, when the pump capacity and cam action is faster than the nozzle flows, so then the nozzle is the timed restriction. I'd like to see a pump nozzle that sprays closer to horizontal. The ideal is to have a fuel curve that follows the demands of the engine more closely, and relies less on accelerator pump volume. When you can tune for an overlapping fuel curve that allows the engine to free rev without the accelerator pump, you are getting close. The Holley pink cams are high volume, but carry the fuel across some 75 degrees of throttle opening, so are useful to reduce the volume used in the first 25 degrees. This company has spent the money in R&D, so for the cost of the units, it would be worth a go. I hope they have patented their product to stop the copycats. Gary |
I installed one this fall and it did make a difference - just feels smoother on acceleration, particularly early on at lower RPMs - worth the $40. In my case, it helped another issue that I hadn't addressed yet. I had the car dyno tuned and the carb was re-jetted. That led to picking up a slight stumble off idle - very minor, but something that needs to be addressed. The PowerBlast Plate took the majority of the stumble away and the last few times I drove it before winter set in I only noticed it a couple times - and much less so - barely perceptible, so much improved. I'll still address what's left of the stumble in the Spring, but this simple little plate does work as advertised and is simple to install. The only install question I had was questioning the need to remove the carb, particularly since the cobra is small enough to lean over and get a line of sight directly over it. I followed the instructions anyway and realized how difficult it would have been to align the plate perfectly with the carb on the car. Plus, if you dropped the screw or nozzle... So, if you install one, do it on the bench - very easy that way.

I have a throttle body with the spiral Cuts in it it's a hundred times better than stock I don't know what spdbrake is talking about.

Have you got a dyno printout that proves that before and after? 1st post, and already disrespectful. Gary |
Personally, I don't add anything to my engine that won't improve it by at least 200 times, unless it bears the slogan "As Seen on TV."

The only Snake Oil mod I've considered this this Flux Capacitor.
Flux Capacitor - $15,849.95 : KaleCoAuto.com, Your home for the rare, unusual, and hard to find auto parts. But the Butt Dyno won't help if I get somewhere before I leave... Butt Dyno - $529.95 : KaleCoAuto.com, Your home for the rare, unusual, and hard to find auto parts. BTW they do sell 710 caps if you need one. 710 Cap - $5.99 : KaleCoAuto.com, Your home for the rare, unusual, and hard to find auto parts. BTW I did install one of the Power Blast plates this thread is about and it did help off-idle tip in to crisp up. (I think) |
If the idle circuit is lean it will hesitate at transition ....turn the idle mixture screws out .Forget the other crap.

Looks like they might restrict airflow a little?
