Default NORCAL 10/21 Saturday - Sutter Street Grill?

Not a bad turnout this month for what was originally going to be a small breakfast. Cobras, GT40s, Daytona...and some old friends. After breakfast about eight or so of us took a drive through the Gold Country through 49. Perfect weather.

Are you getting soft in your old age? Beautiful Fall weather and the best we can come up with is a drive 2 miles from our homes (LOL).

Is there any interest out there for a long ride such as Downyville. Just checking

I dont know Duane, I think you guys should come down this way....I have the joy of just mini-vans and motorhomes....whats a 3 hour drive each for you guys? might have to join a Viper club or somethin......eeeuuuuuwwwwww

Ed,
We sometimes go there in Auburn. I checked the map for Awful Annies in Lincoln. Is there a big parking area across the street? Looks to be close to the center of town there... Is it in that big brick building or near the gas station center of town; left hand side as you come in. We should plan to go there next month for sure if there is parking.

Then again, maybe not -

I had one of the screws work loose that holds the caliper bracket in place. In order to get to it, the rotor has to be removed. To remove the rotor the grease cap must be removed from the wheel hub/disc to get at the castellated nut. I have removed grease caps many, many times on other vehicles, but this one is a different story. Typically a screw driver and hammer or water pump pliers will do the trick, but not with this one. This baby is on there and I can't get it to budge! What's the secret?

It's a Wilwood set-up.

Phil,
If its an original cap, it could be corroded/siezed in there a bit. Is there enough surface sticking out to get some channel locks on it to twist it a bit before pulling straight out? Or, is it one of those dumb flat aftermarket caps? If you waste the cap, just get new ones at Kragen or something. Worst case, drill a small hole in it, screw in an old style dent puller and yank that F%^ker out! Ha. Good luck.

Thanks - it's a Wilwood setup. I've discovered that the cap has threads and screws on, although I don't know if it turns clockwise or counterclock wise to loosen. I'm trying to find that out now through the Unique forum.

Phil,
Yes, my old Wilwoods on my Unique threaded on too. Left to loosen. They are snug, just go very slow. As I recall, I had to put a giant crecent on there or they have a special tool if you have the annodized caps like I did. Just tape it with masking tape and you can use a crecent. Duane

Duane, Awful Annies is on the corner (it is the brick building) there is a large parking lot across the street (says its private but we can ask to park there. They have never told my to move yet.
Cindrrr, a viper club? Please tell us you are joking...........
I won't let my friends drive drunk, chevys or vipers. Maybe we can make trip to you this spring. You are correct it would be a great drive.

I'm back in the drivers seat! Problem solved, with the exception of a nail I discovered in my front left, which will get fixed tomorrow.

For what it is worth - here is a post I put on the Unique forum outlining what occurred:

I don't know if any of you have experienced what happened to me, but I would highly recommend you use safety wire on the bolts that hold the backplate in place that the front calipers bolt to - it mounts to the spindle assembly.

Recently on a drive in the foothills I heard a chirping sound in the front left wheel when applying the brakes. Upon further inspection I discovered that two of the three bolts that hold the backplate in place had back out and were rubbing on the backside of the rotor. Fortunately, I discovered this before any serious damage was done. The bolts have holes for safety wire, which is now in place. I also used safety wire on the two bolts that hold the caliper to the backplate.

In order to perform this task, it is necessary to remove the calipers and rotors - about an hour for the both sides. When removing the grease cap beware (Wilwood) - it is threaded (Thanks Tony!!!) and comes off counter clockwise very easily once you know it is threaded

As I recall, those backed out on my Unique as well. I remember having to go through the same thing. From that day forward, anything that came loose or looked like it would come loose got Lock-Tight on it!

Lock-tight is good, but if the bolts have holes they get safety wire as well See you Saturday....
