The reason you don't want to use one of those shot-filled dead blow hammers is that the shot is inside a metal container under the plastic/rubber. If you chunk off the rubber, you WILL gouge the spinner or wheel. I replaced my first chunked dead blow hammer with a lead one and haven't had a problem since. I don't cover the spinners or hammer with anything and just lightly polish them when done. There are only slight dull spots on them and the buff right out. Course that probably some of that evil lead and I'm doomed!
