Thanks. Yeah, I figured it was a "who you spoke to thing". I think I can restrain myself for another 31 days. Hell, it's been 2-1/2 years in the making so what's another month?
I was working on it the other night, and fired it up with the garage door shut. I ran it for about 30 seconds to verify the tach was working, then shut if off. Then I heard this REALLY WIERD SOUND. I'm thinking, "What in the WORLD is THAT?!?" I walk around the car and realize the sound is coming from the corner of the garage, behind the dog ramp. Behind the dog ramp is my terrified cat, who had come into the garage to keep me company while I worked on the Cobra. I didn't realize he was in there when I fired up the Cobra. He still thinks my Cobra is evil... DD |
Sadly Consistency and training are not strong points at the CA DMV.
When I went in and (eventually) spoke to a manager, I was able to negotiate a TOP "1" in October as i used the B&L insp and getting it appraised and properly insured with AAA args and other activites and said I wanted to be able to use the car to meet the requirements of SB 100. so the car is now insured with AAA, and I am following up on the other items. Keep in mind DMV reads this forum, so we probably should come up with some constructive hints. As far as the SB100 Permits go, i think this year will be the fastest yet. --supposed economic downturn or no. --Steve |
I initially received a 90-day TOP with my SB 100 sequence number, then got another 90-day TOP from my local AAA office. But when I went back to AAA for another, they said I shouldn't have received the earlier one and that only DMV can issue TOPS for SPCN vehicles. Then went to DMV and they would only give me a 30-day TOP, which turned out to be all I needed.
Point is, depending on who you get at the AAA office, you might be able to get one there with far less hassle! |
can i register any car with the dmv for a sb100 registration...i have a heavily modified race/track/autocross car that is already registered and is about to become a trailer queen track car...if i could get a sb100 registration i could drive it back and forth from the track without spending an arm and a leg on a truck and trailer...if i go through what you all have been discussing is it possible to convert it to a sb100 car...seems like this year might be a low demand year for that kind of thing

Ok , alot of info but I need a simple clarification: if I purchase a car built in 2008 " out of State" with a " new " 2008 engine ( and block) ( but no smog equipment on it) can I apply for the SB100 by " BODYSTYLE " with a new CA reg date of 2008 and still get the exemption without hassle? I believe the car is currently registered out of State as a 2008 mfg date..

You're not required to pay your fees prior to January 2nd, but it's a good strategy.
It's pretty chaotic on SB100 day, so you really want to have your documentation in the DMV's system and your fees paid. Not likely, but any glitches with your paperwork, missing form, etc. could delay the process as they are calling Sacramento to request the sequence numbers. |

In regards to the TOPS: did anyone notice our california courts have ruled that the police can not stop you just to see why you have one. You are entitled to drive anywhere you like with it. This post is directed at the Pasadena policeman who feels it is his right and obligation to stop every cobra with one. .......:)

Two more questions : it appears that since the car is new it is " not" registered yet in any State..Will this have any effect on the SB100 here in CA ? Also , let`s say for some reason I do not get the SB 100 this year..Can I get a TOP to drive the car until next year??...Thx ..Great feedback.

Just responded to your email. If the car has a motor installed and has never been registered, then you'll need to have seperate receipts for the car and motor/trans from two different sellers. If for some reason you don't get your SB100, you can probably finagle enough TOPs to keep you going. It's hit or miss (depending on who you talk to) regarding the number and length of TOPs that the DMV will issue. |

1.) No. 2.) Yes, but. Yes you can get a TOP, but they're pretty stingy with them. I did get a 90 TOP, but when I went to renew they only gave me a 30 day and asked questions. I think you'd have trouble getting TOPs for a full year. Mattt |
Matt's right. If you need to go the TOP route for 2009, you might want to start the registration process in the spring, so you have a TOP for the prime driving months.

I am in a similar situation. New CSX right at the end of the year. I do not think I will have the paperwork 2 to 3 business days before Jan 2.
So, what you guys are saying, is it might be better to wait to file any paperwork untill spring when you might be driving more? What if its July and the car has a few hundred miles. Will the process pick that up? Cops are cool around here and I know I can always say I just got the car from the builder. |
If you have all of the documents (MSO and receipts) and you complete all of the DMV forms, you should take a shot at getting your SB100 number.
You can't drive the car without a TOP. My thinking was that since there are number of things to take care of (CHP visit, brake/safety check) once you take delviery of your car, you can finesse enough TOPs to keep you going during the summer and fall. It's the craziest thing, those CHP visits are hard to get, they get cancelled and pushed out due to business travel, and oh yeah...I needed need to go to the BAR because I'm trying to my engine to pass smog. ;) |

Remember that all the receipts you bring to DMV must be originals-no copies. We lost out one year because of this and returned to the DMV office too late. Are experience with Placerville DMV was fast and efficient. They have 1 clerk assigned for the SB100 applications only. I don't remember her name (maybe Jan), but she is a veteran of registering these cars. The office is small and there were only 6 people along with me. I did arrive the very next business day after the 1st at around 8am. One guy had been there since 4am. Best of luck! If you apply for the Tops too many times, they will only grant you a 1dy pass and it must be justified (ie. smog, inspect, etc.)
