What DVM offices in N. Cal have a good reputation for processing SB-100 applications?

My chassis will be delivered in April, but can I go through the SB-100 registration process on January 2 if I have a Certificate of Origin?

LodiWino,

You shouldn't have any problems with the SB100 process if you complete the registration forms and pay your fees in advance.

In addition to the certificate of origin and receipt for the rolling chassis, you'll need to show receipts for the engine and transmission.

Bug's right.

Do a dry run at your recommended office and get all your forms pay the fees etc.
So you have as little to do on Jan 2 as possible. Just check in and wait 'till they get thru to Sacto. to get your number.
Then, number in hand (and 90 day temp. reg.) you can do the CHP Vin deal, brake and light check etc at your leisure.

Lodi,

You do not need your receipts for the engine and transmission, but you will need the MCO and the sales receipt for the car. Just put an honest estimate of the cost of the engine and transmission on the Statement of Construction DMV form. When you finish the SB100 process, whenever, they will want a copy of the engine and transmission receipts and they will check the amounts against your estimate that you made previously.

Default Tracking how fast the sequence numbers go this year?

I'm wondering how quickly the sequence numbers will go this year as compared to previous years; with the downturn in economy and many people holding on to their money a bit more these days. It will be interesting to see if there has been any effect on the number of cars getting built and registered these days as compared to prior years.

Request for Stats?:
To whomever reads this and gets an SB100 number this year... Please report back your sequence number and exact clock time you received it that day in line so we can track it and compare.

Santa Clara has the best reputation. Everyone who has gone there on Jan 2, has nothing but good things to say about their process and organization. I have not yet heard of anyone going there that has not gotten his number.

You can email me at wanab5150@comcast.net and I'll fill you in. There were 7 of us this year at Folsom DMV and things went slick as snot for those of us that did not attempt to BS them. And I mean ANY BS!...We all got numbers but not before several idiots thought they were smarter than DMV and tried things like registering these kits or component cars as a 1965...or as a Superformance, Factory 5 etc.

IT'S A : (2007, 2008 etc.)SPECIAL CONSTRUCTION". THERE IS NO EXCEPTION OR ALLOWANCES FOR NAMING OR DATING A SPECIAL CONSTRUCTION whatever you want, unless you want to eventually find your car on a tow truck and stored for several months. Contact Bay area Cobra Club for more ...they know! I have heard of some using the engine number and engine build date and getting away with it. BUT.....again, is it worth taking the chance of being towed?

You might say I'm an insider in the process, from the DMV and Law Enforcement end!

So what should one expect as far as fees? Is it just sales tax and lic fees for the cost of the car and the engine and trans? I don't have the engine and trans receipts but I do have the MCO for the Kirkham. Is that all?

Does anyone have experience with Central Ca. DMV's? Fresno/Clovis/Madera???

The DMV will charge you sales tax on the car, engine, and trans (really the major components).

Did you buy the car without the engine and trans? Has the car ever been registered before?

As I said above, you don't have to have your receipts for the engine and tranny, if you have not bought the tranny and engine yet. However, you do have to give a reason for not having them and you must give them an estimate of the engine, transmission and the installation costs. The State will charge you fees and sales tax based upon the total build cost including any estimates. Do not attempt to be dishonest or you can face perjury since you sign the Statement of Construction.

Right, no motor or trans as yet... so I am looking at 7'somthing percent for sales tax on the cost of the car plus estimated engine and trans costs? Then registration fees.

So I should be looking at something like $4000-$6000.

Yes, and when you later R&R that $300 junk yard motor and transmission for a better powertrain, spend $10,000.00+ on body, paint interior, etc... and have it appraised for insurance purposes don't forget to go down there and have them adjust your purchase price for the full appraised value. After all, it's the honest thing to do.

Without knowing the total cost of your build, we cannot determine if this amount is correct. The sales tax rate is much more beneficial where your located than the SF Bay Area.

Ah, the madness begins once again. Duane has a point - it will be interesting to see what effect the economy has on how quickly the 500 numbers evaporate in 2009. Too bad there isn't some way to start a pool

I prepaid my fees to get my temp reg (and get inline for my SB100)

$3462.00

Reminder; if you buy your motor in CA you will pay sales tax on that from the vendor, you may want to make sure to point that out on whatever items that were sourced locally in CA.

Story: They tried to charge me sales tax on sales tax, and since this is not England I poilety declined and had them address the math issue, they happily obliged. .

Also Make sure the receipts have serial numbers , or state no serial number. for some reason LG DMV got freaky that my trans receipt did not have a SN#.

I have since learned that Los Gatos DMV is staffed by 36 martians and 2 good people.



so for January, --should we get an RV or tents for 1/2/09. --Ideas >?

We could watch Gumball Rally.

The amnesty program is kicking off, so that may push a some a number of people into the SB100 pool. The downturn could balance that out though.

The interesting thing, is that there's no rhyme or reason to the numbers. The very first number issued at 8:01 am could be 499.

The good news that your chance of snagging an SB100 cert increases exponentially if you follow the advice of fellow CC members.

For those that are going to get numbers next month:

1. Before you go to the DMV next month, meet with the an informed DMV employee at the site where you're going to get your number to review your paperwork, verifying that you have everything that's necessary to get a number, and talk about what the procedure will be come that first business day in January.

2. Scrutinize all your DMV paperwork before and after you leave the counter after receiving your SB100 number. Make sure all your personal information is correct and that the DMV has all their information correct and in the right places.

Go to www.dmv.ca.gov and poke around in the online services for a DMV fee calculator.

My tax & fees runs up to about $3700.

I stopped by the Santa Clara DMV to review my paperwork. The first person I talked to looked at me like I was an extraterriestrial. She got confused, but then pawned me off on another woman that knew her stuff. She reviewed my paperwork and receipts, touched base on them with the SB-100 specialist and gave me the thumbs up. I asked about a TOP, but they said I'd have to wait until January 2.

See you guys bright and early at the Santa Clara DMV. Who's bringing donuts and coffee?

Doug, they gave me a 90-day TOP last year (October 2007) when I started my paperwork pre-lottery. If you tell them that you'll need to get to and from the shop, find out the roadworthiness or do the CHP appointment (or B&L, if required), then they should give you one. Don't mention that you'll need to go to the BAR, because the BAR will want the SB100 cert, which you won't have yet.

Doug,

Did they indicate on your paperwork whether a brake or safety/light inspection is required? Like Rodney said, you should be able to get a TOP for the purpose of inspections and the CHP visit. I've heard some stories about the DMV not issuing a TOP, but I bet you could get one if you go back and push the issue.
