ZDDP Additive

Due to the lack of zinc in modern motor oils, I've been using a ZDDP additive to protect the flat tappets and camshaft in my 57 T-Bird, Y Block, 312.
From the perspective of 'there's never too much of a good thing', other than cost, would there be any benefit or downside of using this additive in a motor with roller tappets?

I use an additive on all my engines. In theory, it will decrease bearing wear and glassification of the cylinder walls and rings.

Sounds good on paper, anyway.

ReMorton 12-13-2013 01:12 PM

Thx. Just did a search of the forum. Lotsa info. Seems the consensus is that it cant hurt.

If you want "belt and suspenders", then Joe Gibbs XP3 and Cam Shield. You will be oozing ZDDP!;)

I use Brad Penn in everything.....

Dwight 12-13-2013 06:40 PM

I picked you a case of Brad Penn for Coach Mike last week when I was in Lawrenceburg, Tenn at a speedshop. Cost $69 a case.

Local race guys use it and claim it's the best they have tried.

Ditto.....

Brad Penn Green, (20-50) with zink additive is $145 smackers a case in Ontario Canada. It is very hard to find, and has to be ordered ahead of time. The product is not usually kept in stock, and I find it at a speed shop 56 KLMS from my home. I use 14 quarts of oil every change. With the WIX oil filter, the cost for an oil change is a little over two bills every 3000 miles. I'm not wineing, but I think you get what you pay for. Crappy Tire does not fill the bill.

maybe having it shipped in from the US from a dealer may be cheaper for you.
have no idea what shipping and customs would do but it may be worth looking at.
a case sells for 68.00..plus shipping

Mother
Don't know where you are buying your B/P oil but you are being ripped a new one..:eek:
the last 4 cases I bought were in the neighborhood of $65:00 plus tax/case.

They may ship direct to you if you don't want the drive.they are the distributor & probably sell to the retailer you are buying from.

I get my Brad Penn off of Amazon. I just checked and a case of twelve is $67.91 with free shipping for those of us with Prime, like me.

Keith Craft sells and uses Joe Gibbs oil in all his engines. As I do.

Amazon has all the Joe Gibbs oil flavors as well, with free shipping for Prime, but I was surprised to see that the price of Joe Gibbs is about double that of Brad Penn.%/

You get whatcha pay for.

undy 12-20-2013 04:07 AM

M1, 15w50.

It has all the goodies needed without the "Cobra Tax" added to all the halo oils' prices.

Mobile 1 at the 50w level is good for ZDDP, see below. BUT, once you drop down below that weight the ZDDP in Mobile 1 drops to 700ppm. Totally unacceptable for solid flat tappets. So, with all the stupid people we have on this forum, who are seemingly incapable of reading critically, you should, as a Christmas act of charity, wave that flag in front of their blind eyes.... Maybe jump up and down, too.

Yep, I about stroked out when I went and picked up a case of Joe's stuff. Not cheap, but has all the good stuff in it. I'm sure Joe isn't making it himself. Curious who is making it for him?
