New 460 engine build
I just talked to the engine builder and he said that my 460 had 3 broken rods and 2 broken pistons. He believes that the failure occurred in the piston which caused a chain reaction that I never want to witness again:LOL:. This time I will be using H-Beam rods and forged pistons. He will be doing some porting, a custom cam and 950 HP carb to top it off. He says it will produce more then 550HP on the dyno and will be very kind on the street. I should have it ready to drop in the end of June. I will advise for a engine party:).

Glad to hear you will be back on the road soon. Hopefully you will be able to make the Columbia River and Sun Mountain runs.

If you are going to replace rods and pistons and it sounds like maybe turning the crank as well, you can pick up 50 quick horsepower by going with a 514 stroker crank. It will probably be the cheapest cost per horsepower you ever spend. Jody |
Jody, I discussed the option of doing a 514 or 521 with my builder and he thought that might not good such a good option in the Cobra due to the high torque at low RPM's. He was afraid that the car would not hook up and just spin the tires. His 521 builds over 650HP and similar torque. He wanted to build my engine to produce power a little higher in the rpm band so I can put it to the ground better.

Smoke Show
Hey Jake,
My old 460 would launch at idle or it was a smoke show though 80 mph, just ask the Mountie hiding behind the tree in Chilliwack.. Sounds like a good build, keep the compression to 10:1 for pump gas. Perry. |

I just finished a freshin up on my 385 series 429SCJ. I had 19K miles on it and most of them were track miles. My motor was 540 at the crank with a solid valve train, and PAW gear drive. I am glad I did the tear down because I learned a couple of things in the process.
My PAW Gear drive broke the dog-bone and was floating in the timming chain cover smaking my block. I was also crushing my bearings at the 6.5-6.8K that I was turning the motor on the track. Everything else was perfect! I run JE Pistons. I only upgraded to Total seal rings (0.05% leak down now) and up graded the bearings and added a Milodon Gear drive. The engine rocks and runs great all of the weak links should be gone now. I know of several 385 series motors that have had piston faliure because they were not forged or better. |

Jake , just something to look out for on the new engine.
Was 7 or 8 one of the rods that broke? If you get x fire between them, then 8 can fire over 90* early and cause exponential load on the rod and bearing. As a precaution I would route the plug wire away from eachother- do not put them parrallel to eachother to look nice. Perry. |
460 Engine build
The main reason I go with the 514 stroker is to get away from the Ford 2.500 large rod journal size. It is not a very good design for higher RPM use with it's narrow width and large diameter. The 514 stroker crank uses the much better BB Chevy rod journal size of 2.200. The other problem with the 460 Ford engine is that the main oil galley is also the passenger lifter galley and you get a lot of oil lost around the lifters. The main and rod bearings are not getting oiled as good as they really should for a performance engine. This is the same thing that Ford did on the 351C engines and it worked fine for a street low HP engine. We install lifter bore bushing to make the galley solid with a .060 hole to each lifter and this oils the bottom end much better. I would ask your engine builder if he is aware of this problem. You will need to run a little more clearance on the 3.00 mains and 2.5 rods if you stay with that deal. The 514 is a better package for all of the reasons listed above and makes more power. Just change the power band with the camshaft and lower the compression and run on regular gas. Free cheap and more reliable HP witch is a no brainer. Good luck, Keith

Summer Trip
Marshall, I would be hard pressed to fit another trip in this summer. Kim and I are booked to the max. I might be able to fit in a few day runs late August. The engine is all done and we are waiting for the new kevlar clutch to arrive the end of this week. I hope it runs as good as it looks!

As for the engine specs.....it is a 500" stroker with a Skat crank, H-Beam rods, KB forged aluminum pistons, secret cam grind (very aggresive), custom 900 carb., rebuilt heads with port and polish and flow benched. Everything was balanced. I hope this will work. I should be installing it Aug. 11th. I also powder coated the intake and valve covers to get away from the dirty cast look I was sporting before.
