Default Differential unit

Hi.
Anybody know what differential is used on the shelby csx cars.
Cant seem to find any, all i know it is a salisbury unit.
Think the kirkham cars are same sort of diff unit.
Building my own kit car be nice to get close to original spec as i can.

A Jaguar XJ sedan diff is nearly the same. Kirkham and Hawk cars in UK both sell a adaptor plate, so the jag diff can be used in a genuine chassis.
Hope this helps.

The CSX cars use an aluminum diff. I'll bet it's pricey to buy one, but SA would, I'm sure, be glad to sell ya one. There are cheaper solutions using Jag, Vette, 9 inch Ford, or 8.8 T-bird solutions. Assuming price is a consideration. You didn't say it was.....

It's a copy of the Jag IRS Salisbury unit. For a lot less than the Shelby/Kirkham aluminum unit, you can pick up a Jag rear. Depending on what kit your are building, mating the drive axles up to your uprights can be tricky.

Default Diff

Hi Lads thanks for your knowledge.
Ye managed to get hold of a 4HU Unit jag irs today but theres no front mounting holes for the four bolts on the front. And would i need to convert the output pulleys to be the same as the front pulley. to take the drive shafts.
Not sure if there is a conversion kit about.
Could do with someone with a csx to get the numbers off there diff if that's ok.
Using the same set up as origanal chassis have got drawings from cobra restorer.
Will post pictures when done.
Thanks again.

Default Hello,

If you are using the CR drawings you should contact Mickmate on this forum. There are several big and small mistakes in the CR drawings. Mickmate has been making changes for a while.

The original diff housing has 4HU cast in. The remake alum shelby housing also has 4HU cast in.

I used the CR drawing for my chassis and so far all is in order, with a couple small changes.

good luck, karl

I fyou have a chance to check out David Kirkham's gallery, you will probably find as I did the differential mounts used for the original style diff. without the front four mounting holes. The old style mounts mounted to the bolt holes at the bottom of the stub axle seal plates.
If I can find the picture in my stuff I'll post it.

If you use a Jag diff and parts of the side shaft make sure the gusset with the 5" (?) hole is as big as you can make it. The XJ forks scratch.

Can this thread be moved to "scratch builders", please?

Nice shot Bob. Note a couple of things on the picture. CSX style is now being cast in aluminum. They do take Dana 44 internals with some subtle differences between them and Jag. Most notable is the spline count. The CSX have bosses on the nose to hold the pinion mounts, the Jag brackets come off the lower control arm mounts to get out to the same place. The Jag axles have a boss on them that went into the brake rotors originally. The CSX axles also have a boss on them so to use CSX axles on a Jag rear you need an adapter flange between. We are working on a kit right now for a bolt in of the Jag to a CSX chassis.

You might want to take a look at this site. Maybe no help but who knows....

The adapter that holds the front mount needs to upgraded from previous designs. I had one fabricated by AC cars to mount my Jaguar rear ends in a CSX chassis. I found that it was pulling the threads on the cast iron Jag Diff housings. I drilled and tapped the Diff for 7/16 studs and reinforced the side plates to prevent distortion under acceleration. It is a pain to install but now when I torque the mount, it remains tight no matter what I subject it to.
The sides are 3/8" steel along the load axis. The original mount design with 4 bolts at the front of the housing is much better because it reduces the moment arm. I am not too sure about an all aluminum housing for the
Dana 44 though, I would be worried about torque capacity. I have no experience with these housings so they might be adequate.

I found, while bolting a XJ diff in an original type frame with the brackets to mount the lower Jag control arms, that those brackets sit exactly at the frame end piece. I drilled 5/8 holes and pushed the long shafts through.
You may not want to weld additional brackets for the front for an orig car, but I did for mine.

The other big difference is the bearing size. The Jags use smaller bearings than the Cobra housings. They originally were sourced from an ISO Griffin or some obscure vehicle.

427 AC, where did you source the 4 bolt differential? That differential would solve a lot of problems if it is reasonably priced.

Thanks,
Bob

+1

That housing is ideal. It looks like it is aluminum painted black. Is it aftermarket or OEM?

Thx,

Ed

Hmmmm,

1600GBP? I guess that doesn't fit into the "reasonably priced" category for me. I'll keep looking or use my Jag rear (eventually).

Great looking unit, though. Should work fine for you.
