Frame Differences

We currently have a 50th anniversary cobra in the shop to finish for the customer. He has a 260 with a T-10 trans, Weber carbs and period correct generator (now wired as alt) and gen. mount, pulleys etc. The problem is the fan belt hits on the right side engine bay strut bar.
My question is does anyone know if the strut bars are in a different position in an original early, 62-63, chassis compared to the anniversary edition? Any help is appreciated. Sean

Is it a glass or aluminum body?

Aluminum

I positioned mine exact to 2259, that was what I measured and it seemed to work. Do not know what KMS does, give them a call.....

Jeff,

He's trying to fit an generator... looks to me like you have an alternator ;)

I had the same issue with SPF 0004, basically same car as the 50th. I was using the repopped cast steel alternator mount, and had to modify it to move the alternator up .5" to get belt clearance from the scuttle tube.

Can you post a picture? Especially one showing the generator mount.

The OP is looking for experience with mounting a big ol' generator on an KMS car.

BTW- I didn't have any issues mounting an alternator on 0002.

Look at where the diagonal tube is attached at the front spring tower, it should be attached about 1" to 1 1/2" down from the upper shock mounting brace work if not this could be your problem.

mickmate 07-14-2014 07:26 PM

The cowl support tube is the problem I reckon. They did get installed at different heights as you'll see from the gap between the tube and the footbox top differing from car to car. I would bet the generator cars have the tube mounted lower as the genny is so long.

Is that the engine for the car in question? Looks like the wrong bracket to me.
I doubt that the brace tube is in the wrong location on a KMS frame.

Looks like we are going to shave the rubber on the original fairlane style rubber motor mounts 3/4 of an inch. this will drop the engine 3/4 in.
This will give us clearance for the carb stacks and put the generator belt on the outboard side of the tube.
The strut tube will have a removable section close to the generator.
Any input on transmission mount?

legenmetals 07-14-2014 09:16 PM

This is the engine. I have looked at a lot of images and it seems that the early cars had custom fabricated generator mounts or modified Ford mounts depending on the year and if the car had a Lucas or Ford generator.

CompClassics 07-14-2014 10:05 PM

Is there a reason you didn't go for the alternator?

legenmetals 07-14-2014 10:42 PM

Just the spirit of the build. Early cars had generators. This generator has been rebuilt as an alternator.
I'm looking for a set of four cast iron tri-y style early exhaust manifolds also.

I'm looking for a set of those myself. If you find any besides the ones for your car, let me know.
