Confirmation appreciated on DR3 wiring

I’m trying to identify the correct colors of the old cables of my DR3 wiper motor.

Based on the following diagram I came to the following conclusion.
Is my assumption correct?

Thanks for any confirmation/ correction.

It seams I'm the only one using a DR3 but I'm sure this is not the case.

I connected my motor to a PRS7 switch and it seems that on NORMAL and FAST the engine is running in different directions (clockwise and counter-clockwise).
Should this be the case?

The park switch gets activated by the cable, but how will this be done?

Thanks for any clarification

I have this setup, which works OK on test. I will dig out the wiring info I used to connect it and try to post something over the weekend.
The two speeds work in the same direction - it's the final 'park' sweep that goes in reverse to drop the blades down lower on the screen.

Hi rsk289

I used the following drawing to identify the cable of the DR3 and the switch.
http://www.clubcobra.com/forums/pict...ictureid=13040

It is really strange that the gear-wheel changes the direction. Some how it seams the +/- wiring could be wrong on the coil, but how this would be the case as only 5 and 3 are changed...

Hi Alf,

I just got my DR3 working with a PRS7 switch. These are the instructions I received for bench testing the motor which worked for me:

The colors on our wiper motors are SOLID GREEN, Green/BLUE, G/WHITE, G/BROWN, G/RED and G/YELLOW.. This is a standard Lucas six wire set up for all 6-wire wiper motors in the 1950's-1960's with the exception of ORANGE sometimes being substituted for the YELLOW usually on Rolls Royce and Bentley cars. The simple bench test of this motor is as follows. SOLID GREEN will be your power wire. It doesn't matter to the motor if it is POSITIVE or NEGATIVE. Connect the BLUE & WHITE wires to each other. Then take the RED & YELLOW and connect to the opposite side of the battery from that connected to the GREEN. This combination should give you HIGH speed. Substitute only the BROWN wire for the YELLOW and you should have LOW speed. This will verify that the motor runs properly. Next find the wire from your harness that gets HOT when the ignition is turned on. This will go the the GREEN wire on the motor. All other wires should match. YELLOW or ORANGE are the same.

I have also attached a schematic that I used to successfully connect my wiper motor to my PRS7 switch. This also worked very well for me. I have the entire Lucas wiper manual which I can e-mail if you like. It is an 8M file size.

Good luck.

Ah - exactly as Mongoose shows it.

What cable have you used? The cable for this wiper motor is different in that it has a small rod fixed to the head of the cable (where it fits over the lug on the connecting rod) which will operate the park switch once the motor has been turned off. Most cables do not have this part attached. This entire setup is very similar to XK120/140/150 Jag, so if you have incorrect parts you may be able to get around it by contacting a Jag supplier. This guy is very helpful with obscure wiper parts:

I also worked with Steve Hunt and purchased my DR3 Reverse Park Rack and correct nut from him. He is very knowledgeable and helpful. I was extremely happy to get mine running. I have a video showing normal speed, low speed and when I turn the switch off, you can see the rack run in reverse for half a second which is replicating the park function. Now I need to finish the car so that I can install all of this great old stuff:)

@ Mongoose
MANY THANKS for the great drawing
I'll cross-check my wiring

@ Roger
Now I got is and I found the following picture on the store

I started with the DR3, added the PRS7 now and the cable will be next:)

Great, that's the one!

Steve is very helpful and well worth contacting.

Hi Mongoose

Could you please provide me a link to the mentioned video?
:)

Mongoose930 11-15-2014 07:09 PM

Hi Alf,

I checked my phone for the video but I must have deleted it - sorry about that. I have posted pictures of my test fixture in my gallery. I will be testing a few PRS switches with this set up over the next few weeks and will take another video.

Great info

Great guys...............

It works!!
Many thanks for the great help!!:)

I restarted the work from field one.
- Identification of the DR 3 wiring -> did it correct the first time
- Identification of the PRS7 wiring -> did it correct the first time
- Connected them together according the provided wiring (many thanks to Mongoose) -> same as I did it based on other diagram

And it did run!
It seems to me that the PRS7 contacts were probably corroded. At least after many switching attempts it started to work on all three positions.

What I previously identified (direction change) was the change between Normal and Park. The motor did never run on Fast….

That is great news. It is very rewarding to finally solve a problem where the solution has been so elusive. Now you focus on the next stage of the build...

The wiper wiring (with original rotary switch) is explained in my "Wiring Primer", page 21.

PRS7 switch and Lucas DR3 wiper motor

I’ve still an issue with this combination..:JEKYLHYDE

Most of the time it is working fine but from time to time it happens that, the wiper motor is blocking and making some noise. This happens always after the switch gets moved from one position to the other. (different positions)
The only way to solve this is removing the 12V and switch a few times prior to reconnecting the 12V.
This is ok on the table, but not fine if it is mounted inside the engine bay/ dash.

Does one of you have seen the same issue and can something be done to prevent this.

Check the parking switch on the motor. (It's integrated into the nylon plug where all the wires connect.)
The switch slides off the motor body. If I remember correctly, when the pin is pushed, the circuit is broken.

I’m not getting your point.

On a DR3 wiper motor the parking switch is a separated part mounted next to the wiper rack connection.
As shown on the picture at post#4

If this switch gets pushed manually(as I’ve no rack mounted yet) the motor stops if running on P mode.

The problem occurs during switching on the PRS7 switch independent of the mode selected (P,N,F) on it.
