rivet orientation question
For the suitcase bump out on the rear cockpit wall of the 427 cars, were the rivets installed from the trunk side or from the cockpit side? I am guessing they were installed from the trunk, but, if so, didn't the blind end of the rivet make a big bulge under the Naugahyde on the rear cockpit wall? Or is the other way with the ugly end of the rivet in the trunk? About to that point and don't want to be drilling them out!!

Thx for the link. Tried to blow up the pic but it's pretty grainy. Does appear that the head of the rivet must be on the cockpit side as it appears the blind end is what shows in the trunk. I guess this makes sense as to where the ugly end winds up. I will wait to see if someone can confirm from an original car Best Ron |
I also would like to see some good pictures of both sides of the bump out...Also how the Naugahyde was installed on the S/C cars...

Heads in the cockpit. You see the heads under the vinyl on SC cars and exposed on comp cars of course. Dr Bob had some neat tricks for trimming them out.

He did more of a modern hot rod version along the lines of what a lot of you guys like. He did a piece of vinyl over the FIA bump with about a 1" border. The border had the rivet head holes cut out and a surrounding layer over the bulkhead cut right up flush to the borders edge. This effectively made everything level with each other for a top layer to sit very flat over it. I have some pics of it somewhere if my description isn't clear enough Ron. Keep up the good work and great detailing! Since you're in the rivet counters ranks it's 9 rivets top and bottom and two on each end ;-)

Remember these were race cars and getting them into use the primary objective. Raw was it, rivots bare, and symmetry was more asymmetric. |

My thanks as well. Great pics, great info. I think I'm going to try to follow the pics of the red car that shows the rivet heads under the vinyl but without the inch wide overlapping (underlapping??) as in mickmate's pics. This will require some careful cutting/trimming but I have plenty of the vinyl and willing to endure some frustration along the learning curve. I'll keep you all posted on my progress.
It is amazing that a question on rivet orientation brings out so much great conversation. Me thinks that the passion (disease?) runs deep among this crowd. Glad to be part of it !! Happy new years to all !! Best Ron |
