Ammeter needle
I need a needle that looks similar to the one in this BM4 ammeter....
....any ideas? (I have the ammeter but it doesn't have quite the right needle)
I'm looking at old clock needles but they are all too big. Needs to be a little over an inch long.

The "monster"? A bit happening there, but not as much as I'd like because of heavy work commitments and some other issues.
I finally found a supplier for correct roll-over bar grommets, so I can finally fit the bar. It has sprung out somewhat so will have to be careful there. Dashboard blank should be ready for pickup early next week. I sourced a correct 30 to 100 degC water temp gauge as well; that's on its way.
I should be putting this on the build thread, not here, shouldn't I?

Sounds like you are coming along. I suppose it should be in the build thread as well. Sometimes though it might be better to add a thread with a specific question as I am not always sure that people who wold have the answer you are looking for are always the same people who are following your build thread.

Gentlemen,
I haven't had any luck with sourcing a needle for my ammeter. Tried numerous online sites as well as real people on the ground here (watchmakers etc).
If anybody has a 'scrapper' gauge (or clock) that they want to donate for a good cause or a small fee, let me know 
Here's what the needle needs to look like...
A donor gauge of course doesn't need to be an ammeter, so long as the needle appearance is close enough. My gauge is a 2" Smiths, so the needle would need to be around 1" to 1-1/4" (say 25mm to 35mm for you modern metro's).

Got it! I know, it can get expensive! I have about $500 in tachometer and speedometer I think. Just something I have to get right though.

Found this donor gauge; was 'quite cheap' 
A pity to cannibalise it as it looks quite old....but its needle has a calling in a new life!

I am currently stripping the donor gauge and using the needle for my 50A gauge, so it will look close to original, and be usable with modern alternator.

Update - Lucas ammeter (and Smiths fuel gauge)
Some progress here on the gauge collection for my Cobra....
First a recap on the "why...?"
One of the 'inspiration' cars for my 289FIA build was COB6008. COB6008 has, ex-factory, the wide FIA hips, RHD, and also Smiths/Lucas instrumentation, so that's the way I wanted to go with my build.
The Smiths Fuel gauge and the Lucas ammeter that are currently available from Nisonger and Caerbont don't match the original Smiths and Lucas, so I located an ex-MGB fuel gauge and a Lucas BM4 ammeter.
The Fuel gauge, with "single V" bezel was eazy to modify to "double V", but the ammeter needed a bit more work. The bezel was correct, but the scale is 50 amp (not 30 amp) and the needle was not correct to my eye. The 50 amp scale I can live with, as I will initially be running an alternator, but the needle needed correcting. As pictured in an earlier post here, I found a cheap Lucas donor gauge, and I have now 're-birthed' the needle into my gauge.
The result isn't exactly as original, but close enough......

edit: a plug for Caerbont. They have supplied me with correct new bezels twice now , and other stuff as well. They are nice guys, and fully on-board with us enthusiasts. |

Looks great Glen! When you say you’re initially running an alternator, does that mean you’re retrofitting a generator? That’s commitment!
