CSX2431 Imperial Fuel Switch
Could anyone please provide me a detail picture of the Imperial Fuel Switch installed on CSX2431?
I’m interested on how it got labeled (it seems to me there is something written beside the switching positions) as this cannot be seen on the pictures available on the internet. MANY THANKS |

The valve you have is close in design but different than the originals that were used, note the silver cap on the original valve photo. The original valves had "IMPERIAL" embossed on the selector handle. The silver part on the original valve was actually a diecast aluminum part. I have provided a photo below. There were a couple of different methods used to identify the valve handle position, you need to remember that the labeling was done for the benefit of the driver. The labeling of the last iteration of the SAI team competition 289 Cobras had the labeling placed on the dash. I will try to post photos of the labeling from 1963-1964. |

FIA team 289 Cobra CSX2323 at the Nurburgring in 1964 just before it was wrecked......
The letters on the dash within the green box are for the fuel selector valve, "O" OFF, "M" MAIN and "R" RESERVE. There are other in period photos of other team Cobras that will show the same type of lettering but with the letters in different positions depending on how the mechanic building the race Cobra clocked the valve, there will be variances from car to car. There are also variances in locations, Miles had the selector valve diagram on the transmission tunnel behind the shifter on his Cobra where most of the FIA Cobras had them front and center on the dash. |

There were always variations that were dependent on the mechanic that was building the race car and how they installed the valve assembly. You could also find a "T" designating the selector valves handle position between the letters, similar to this example.....

Many thanks for the pictures and the details. "IMPERIAL" is embossed on the selector handle (to visible on the picture) For the moment it is OK for me with the wrong cap. :) |
Ken Miles had the safer location then, with the fuel line outside the cockpit rather than behind the dash.

It would be much safer for the drivers to have the fuel lever selector positions up on the dash, the less time the drivers took their eyes off the road the better!
On another note Armado's photo shows the padlocked fuel cap and the Smiths Chronometric tachometer that were also used on the FIA Cobras (green circles). |

Just fyi, the legends in the first photos posted are not decals - they are Dymo labels. 'Dymo' was a hand-held stamping machine that reverse-embossed a strip of coloured sticky plastic tape for home labelling purposes. It was very common for every use in the UK in the sixties, and was very often seen on racing car parts.

SAI tended to use, paint, DYMO labels or industrial decals to label their racing Cobras. Earlier race Cobras tended to use a mix of the first two methods and later FIA Cobras tended to receive the decals. I believe the markings at the selector valves was possibly done for the mechanics servicing the cars.
Alfredo, Great find! Most all of the SAI team Cobras used a locking system for the fuel cap, even the Daytona Coups. |
