hood rivits, again

Did the 289 cars have rivots in the hood?

jschiller 08-23-2006 07:58 PM

No. That started with the 427.

computerworks 08-23-2006 08:00 PM

As a generalization...no.

Unlike the consistently riveted leading edge of the 427 Comp cars, the vast majority of 289 competition cars did not have that add-on.

The exceptions...It is curious that the Sebring cars (CSX2127,2128, 2129) had the hood rivets, but in a smaller number than the 427 patterns.

They also were seen on FIA car CSX2345, but not the other FIA and USRRC cars.

Speaking of rivets, what kind do I need for the hoodscoop...and where do I get 'em?

DougD 08-24-2006 10:52 AM

I have photos of Ken Miles' 289 Cobra csx2341 at Greenwood in July of 1964. It clearly has hood rivets.

289 FIA (all) cars did have hood rivets.

Ummmaybe not. Especially when Phil didn't see 'em on the only un-rebodied original FIA...

Here's CSX2259:

the car in the photo is not the original "2259". the car belongs to lyn park and in is a "clone" of the original. if you look at the car it doesn't have wiper arms or washer nozzles either. take a look at some period photos of the original "2259". i don"t think the "FIA" inspectors would have accepted the car without wipers do you? the original race cars were shipped without a paint job and all the modifications (hood rivets, trunk bungee cord holes, etc...) were done prior to painting which is why the rivets are so hard to see in photos. i accept apologies.........

Csx2345

I know that, deep down inside, Bob MEANT to refer to CSX2345 (not CSX2259), the former Mike Shoen car that is reputed to be the ONLY original 289 FIA car with all of its original bodywork still intact. THIS is the car that Phil at ERA used to perfect the shape of the ERA 289 FIA car:

....and, BTW, it does have hood rivets.

This car is normally on display at The Shelby American Collection in Boulder, CO. Last month, it joined a few of its vintage team-mates for a little exercise at VIR during SAAC 31.

I stand corrected. :(

I was actually thinking of the hood scoop having no rivets, but I also thought there weren't any around the edges either. Now I'm going to have to recall all our 289s to have the rivets installed.

Or maybe not.

rlearp 08-24-2006 05:03 PM

Excuse my ignorance, but, what did the rivets hold together? Do people put rivets on fiberglass hoods or hoods in general if they don't hold things together?

The hood skin was wrapped around sheet steel that was welded to the periferal tubing. At speed the alumin(i)um skin apparantly tended to come loose, so the rivets were added to hold everything together.
