Early 260/289 shift knob
Does anyone know? 
Where did the early 260/289 Cobras get their shift knobs from? They have a different type of look almost truck/tractor/jeep look.
Was this a Cobra only item?

Only one of the sample cars shown posted is really a complete early shifter...note the thin curved finger pulls of the first design which was fragile and easy to break. The knob I had from an early Cobra that was converted to later specifications had what was left of serations on the knob I believe. And per the other person's post I believe the first Tigers used them also.
Original knobs of that design are pretty rare as they didn't seem to wear well or people discarded them and replaced them with something else. I helped an early Cobra owner find an original NOS one for their car several years ago.
The original serations do not feel good to my hand and would be worse in a speed shift situation, maybe some people sanded the ridges off for comfort? Maybe they sanded the ridges after removing the knob with a pipe wrench......yep. The original knob for by black car was removed long ago with a pipe wrench that did a real good job of messing up the bakelite plastic. The owner at the time put an aftermarket accessory wooden knob SAI use to sell on. He kept the original knob as a souvinir for decades and sent it to me in 1999 tool marks and all. When these were just old sports cars people did things like remove shifter knobs with pipe wrenches.

Thank you, great help for sure. You are right probably not a comfortable knob and mods were very common then.
These cars were really buillt with what was on the shelf.  |

The Superformance referenced knob is a common mustang repro item for 64-66 mustangs == i can even get them with 5 speed graphics on them.
