Default Color of Sidepipes

Can anyone verify the color of the side pipes on the S/C cars?

I've found some comments that white was period correct, others saying black

Looking at the pictures on CSXInfo, the only one I could find showed black

I am certain these were touched up and/or modified during the life of the cars but what did they come from Shelby America as?

thanks

Paul

If you are going "correct", black is the color.

According to my research, all sides pipes came black. Some of the comp cars had white pipes and headers, which were done by the owners (hi-temp coating), not Shelby. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

For what it's worth...On page 250 of The Cobra-Ferrari Wars is a picture of CSX3002 with white side pipes. 3002 was the only works comp 427. It is pictured with an early street 427 at LAX in April, 1965.

Default SC vs Comp side pipe colors

Competition cars- some had white pipes, SC cars all had black pipes. All street cars with sidepipes had black pipes.

There's no such thing as a street car with sidepipes .

Any street car with sidepipes was done after the fact.

Power Surge,

I'm curious about what you mean by "after the fact." I have always thought that things like side pipes, roll bars, and hood scoops were options that were available from Shelby for delivery to the original owner of the car. Are you saying that any 427 street car with side pipes had to have them installed by an owner after initial delivery, or do you just mean that the car was not shipped from England with them? If you mean the former, I wonder how you know this to be true.

I concur with Sal. The STREET cars came with under car exhaust, no hood scoop, no roll bar and a glove box. This and several other items is what made them 'street cars' to begin with. Of course many were converted to the SC look early on, some with more detail than others. Hmmm, come to think of it, kind of replicas today, some with more detail than others.

Classic street car? 428 with a blue surge\water tank.

Right. A street car is a street car. No side pipes, no hood scoop, no roll bar. Any street car that has those items, had them added after the car was delivered new.

Default 427 sc

The 427 SC was a for street version of the 427 competition car which was sold out of left over FIA homologation cars that were not originally intended for street use.. I believe that only 31 of these were ever built and sold. There is a difference between 427competition and 427 Semi Competition cars. The SC cars did have side pipes and hood scoops. Hope that clarifies the side pipe for street car debate.

I don't know the options off hand, however in the Shelby Registry, I think there is a list of options for a 427 street car. The option list may have included a soft top, radio etc. I thought side exhaust might be on the list. I could be wrong on this.

S/Cs were comp cars sold for the street, with some minor changes. Street cars different than S/Cs and comp cars.

Actually, looking at the registry, it's the other way around. There were indications that the hood scoop and roll bar were dealer installed options, but no side exhaust.

Default differences between 427 FIA and SC cars

All I know is what I've read in the Original AC Ace and Cobra restorers guide. That resource lists the SC cars as having side pipes, hood scoops, and drivers rollover bar. To quote Rinsey Mills "Both the side pipes and the roll bar should be black, not chrome." As I remember he said something to the effect- Shelby only put black pipes on these cars, other colors or chrome was done by the owners after delivery and is not correct regarding originality. The intake manifolds were I think steel rather than aluminum and the compression was lowered, as well as the carburation was changed from a twin to a single Holley. The SC cars did have the huge FIA 32 gallon fuel tank, which left very little to no trunk available.

Guys...you're on a side trip....

The original question:

Quote:

Side pipes on Comp and S/C came either black or white paint; the customer could specify.

BTW, The Mills book is good, but not always correct.

Ron, I don't doubt there are errors in the Mills book that is why I sited it as the resource. Where are you getting the White or Black painted specified by owner? Is that from some old Shelby ordering forms or literature? I'm really interested in SC originality. I have not found much beyond the Mills book to use as a resource. Are there other places to get info. besides the book and the registry?

You're in the right place...

Some of us have done quite a bit of research, both first and second-hand, on details of the Comp and S/C cars...plus we have a few Comp and S/C owners and ex-owners on the forum.

Ask any specific questions you might have in a new thread in this sub-forum.

I figured a Ford "repop" made today would have ceramic sidepipes, so went that way:

Advantages:
1. Looks good, polished and all
2. Super easy maintenance (Mothers Blue Metal Polish)
3. Contains heat, runs cooler than painted (safety)

Neither 3002 nor 3016 are very good sources for originality. Both have been restored (3016 even has Trigos on it) and 3002 really has nothing in common with all other comp or S/C cars.
