"Is there any metal or pearl in the paint ... hard to tell."

-I honestly don't know.

In my search for a shade of Blue for my ERA ... I came across this cool website for Mustang colors.

For those that are interested, along with Blue ... there are photos of Mustangs of other colors as well. Granted it's not Cobra related, but it's interesting to see what Ford has done with car colors over the years.

That dark blue is nice......

CSX 4000 blues

Guardsman Blue Met. - PPG TCP 3251622
LeMans Blue Met. - PPG 194955
Navy Blue - PPG 5387
Viking Blue - PPG 13607

I really like the 40th anniversary CSX blue. Intense Blue Pearl coat, Fleet, BC5357B

For a picture of samples (small) see this link for Gessford Machine.

David,

The 'Intense Blue Pearl coat' is aptly named ... wow! Probably a bit too intense for me, but it does look good none the less.

Mine is Viper blue. I like it as well as any blue I have seen.

Ok guys ... time to kick this one around the block one more time :D

It's down the wire for me to pick the color for my 289 ERA ... and I am just not there yet. I was all set to go between SPF Indigo and Lexus Indigo Ink Pearl. Both beautiful colors to my eye.

The issue for me is these paints have a lot of metal flake and they have a quite a color shift depending on how the light strikes the car, especially on a sunny day. This in a way, is precisely why these are such neat colors and I think they really look good on the 427 cars with white stripes.

That being said ... the look I am after for my 289 is a bit more 'old school', kind of like British Racing Green ... but in blue ... just a deep rich enamel looking color. I am not hung up on having an original paint color, just something that is not quite so flashy.

So what I would like to find is a rich deep blue, but with no (or minimal) metal flake ... any suggestions, photos or paint codes ?

Thanks! :)

Check out: BMW Mauritius Blue as a possibility...? I've seen several 427s in the UK in this colour. Oh yes - including mine :-)

The navy blue color that Shelby has, PPG 5387, is a great color. I have it on my car. I will try to upload some pics shortly.

TKB289,

Trevor has some great pictures in his book ("Cobra - The First Years"), with some great paint colors.

On page 66, there is a Princess Alice Blue Cobra that I think is tremendous. I bet that car looks like it could be called 3 different colors depending on what time of day, how strong the sun is; some combination silver, blue and maybe green.

Also, the ACE on page 26, 27 and 29 is a great shade of Silvery Green.

So many other vivid pictures of other colors, definitely worth a look.

Here are some pics of the navy blue (sort of a random selection to show the color in various light):

If you look at the photos on p212 & 213 of my 40 Years book, those 427s are BMW Mauritius Blue but shot on a very dull grey day, so the colour looks dull as well - very different in bright sunlight!

I like DCDoug's deep blue without the stripe. I think this color is very close to the color Trevor mentioned on page 212; 213, but those page have the racing stripe down the middle.

I think that solid color with maybe the white center tires would look fantastic.

FYI, I think the powder blue Kirkham 289 FIA with white tire on page 237 also looks great. So much to choose from!

It's not blue, but that hint-of-green silver that was a special-order original color and just came up on a CSX for sale is just a deadly shade for these cars. Champagne Mist, I think it's called. Foofy name, but more ssssssnaaaake colored than anything else I've ever seen.

EDIT: CSX 4199. It's on Cobra Country.

I'm in the same boat, I have red cobra which I will paint blue. The blue fixation has come from gumball ralley. That color has been so hard to nail down. I have two colors from ferrari that I'm going to choose from
chiaro blue and sera blue. One is medium light and the other is medium dark, they are early seventies colors and look period correct (not flip flop, and have very fine metalics). The light does effect the color but thats due to the metalic flake. Search the web for those colors, it may help.

Tim,

I think I pitched this idea once before, but the car that Canepa did was drop dead gorgeous. It may be a bit darker than what you'd like. Very flat and deep, with no flake at all.

Good luck with your final choice. :)
