I have a lady that needs a hardtop.

Hello,

I’m new here and this is the reason that I register to find some info. I have a (Original) 1965 AC 289 Shelby Cobra they only made 25 of these cars I believe is it true? Anyways I looked high and low for an original hardtop. I called everyone here in America I think?!?!??!??? But I got nothing. I called super performance (excellent service) and nice true gentlemen name Michel is helping me with the search for my original hardtop (I can’t thank him enough) even thought there company doesn’t make AC parts.

I was able to call Shelby American and they referred to me some people over in England where the car was build. This morning I called AC cars In England I left a voice mail but I’m still waiting (I’m so anxious I want to keep searching).

Can I get some help searching or is this a good lead?

No one has posted help or recommendations....

I guess, Peter, the lack of answers is, in itself, an answer.

If you are looking for an original hardtop.... it won't be on the shelf somewhere, available for dropship. I have seen a top or two for sale in the past few years.... but they are rare, indeed.
...and, it's gonna be pricey.

You might try some of the high-end restoration shops.... they may have a lead.

Keep at it; I have found some vintage parts that took more than a year to track down.

Tell us about your car, eh?

Peter,

Just an idea. We in Colorado are lucky to have the Shelby American Collection in Boulder. This is the best collection of Shelby Cars anywhere. Why don't you contact them and see if they have or know about a top for your car?

I do realize the hardtop will be price but that’s not a factor if its available I will buy it. I know the hardtop is really rare to find but it was even more rare to find the car its self. I had people find the car for me too it wasn’t cheap either (commission fees for the finding).

I will try the Colorado thing tomorrow when I get back at the office. This is why a community helps. One man can’t just find something in this case the rare part but you have to search high and low, try all of our options.

I didnt know they had a Shelby American Collection builder, thought they where from England.

The 1st Shelby Cobras where build from England shipped to good old carol for Engine placement.

How do I post pics? I have all documentation of the car when the race car driver raced it back in the 60's.... (I bought it from him recently).

...which car did you get... recently?

...serial number?

american_muscle 06-03-2004 02:33 PM

Do they even have Hard Tops for that Year? No clue … lack of knowledge is a weakness when it comes to this car. This is why I need some expert help like Michel from Super performance.

Hi from Germany, I've got what you are looking for !!!
On my shelf I have since several years an old original AC hardtop with the chrome surounds, and the trimmed sky inside. It will need some restauration. This is one of the rarest pieces to find for an original car! I won't use it for my FIA, but it wil be perfect to fit a AC289. Price is 1500€.

Peter,

The Shelby American Collection is not a builder, they are THE Shelby Museum. They restore original Cobra's, as well as Daytona Coupes and GT40's. If it has anything to do with an original Cobra, they know it. They will know if any 289 Cobra's had hardtops and also where they are in the world.

Try speaking to the folks at Cobra Restorers Inc(cobrarestorers.com). They are in Atlanta and claim to do csx restoration work.

To find a needle in a haystack, you may want to get as many people looking as you can!

BTW...the serial # is???

Cob 289 that’s great that you have the Original Roof for my AC 289. That’s not a problem for the 1500 that’s about $2k …. Not a problem BUT!!! I would like to see some pictures 1st so I can show it to my mechanics to see what needs to be done to get the roof up to shape.

I would like to contact you I’m here in US Florida
Please Email me at Peter@sawgrassre.com so we can discuss more about this.

I just spoke with my Mechanics and they have a few questions to ask when we talk.
They want to know the Measurements of the Distance of the mountain pins to the car.
He also wants pictures of the roof to from all angles to see what shape she’s in.
The AC cobra that I have is a FIA car.
I’m so happy you have no idea!

Super Cobra I did looked at it a few weeks back and I call that Gentlemen Mike and he is not %100 sure it if till fit my 289. When we spoke he took the measurements in side the roof for that 427 roof top and it will not fit my 289 unless we do some cutting to fit it in. No point of that I want all 289 Original parts not 427 stuff mixed in, I came this far for that 289.

computerworks 06-04-2004 08:59 AM

and....ummm, which FIA car would that be?

american_muscle 06-04-2004 09:06 AM

My FIA car is #96

computerworks 06-04-2004 09:08 AM

Is that the number on the door?

Can you tell us the CSX#?

american_muscle 06-04-2004 09:30 AM

my FIA car is #96 and the CSX#2373.

Hardtop

a_m,

The car you have had a hardtop originally, but lost it long before Chuck turned it into the hybrid FIA/427 narrow hip in the 80's if I remember correctly.

So a 427 type top should fit. Get in touch with COBRA Restorers and see what Chuck says about the rear deck behind the cockpit, it should be the 427 contour.

The neat item was the 2x4 bbl carbs were even an unusual item on the car for it's day.

american_muscle 06-07-2004 05:53 AM

So you’re telling me that the car can have either 427 or a 289 hard top? If this is true I’m still leaning towards the Original 289 hardtop. I want to get a hold of Cob289 from Germany but I haven’t had a chance to speak with him yet.
No replies form him from my Email.
Could he just be bluffing?
The car is almost done restoring and I would like to get the original hardtop here in the states as soon as possible.

Cob289 Email Me
So we can discuss details.
