California updated registration process
I live in Southern California and looking to pick up a Cobra replica from out of state. I did a search and most of the information (lots of it) is all at least a couple years old. I just wanted to see if there have been any changes to the California registration process and if SB100 is still the way to go?

As far as I know, it's the only way you can go. I couldn't register mine by the year of the motor, which I had originally hoped.

Yes, SB-100 is the only legal way now to register any special construction vehicle in this state. Even though I think it still says you can chose the year of the motor they stopped accepting that a few years back up here. Something to do with replacement blocks not having date stamping or along that lines. I always thought that unless you are building a replica of a new car using the year of the body was the best way to go.

It depends on how the car was registered in the previous owner's home State.
If his State allows a replica to be registered by the year that it immitates (say 1965) then California will allow that registration to apply in California, even though it is inaccurate.
However, you could still get hassled by the police and have to prove that the car was 100% titled legally in the previous State in order to avoid impound and fines.
If it were me, I would get the sb100 exemption and register the year of the car as the year it was first registered (completed). California will like you better that way. Gotta get their fees.

The car I want was registered in PA as a 2011 car. It is a 1967 replica. I want to bring it here to California. Do I have to get an SB100 to register it here? What will happen if I buy the car and take it to the DMV to register? Are they going to deny registration? Will I not be able to drive legally? That would be a shame. I'm really at a loss what to do? |

Your best bet is to take it through the SB100 process. As Jim mentioned, the State of California will probrably honor the out of state registration, but what happens down the road is uncertain. Get the SB100, you'll be registered correctly for CA and smog exempt for the life of the car.
It's not that difficult and there are probably still a bunch of numbers left.

If the car was originally titled in PA it will have a "specialty construction" title with a PA issued VIN and VIN plate. It should be affixed to the passenger side of the firewall. If this is the case, then yes, in California SB100 is the way to go. Even if the car is titled as a "1965" vintage, in California I still recommend buyers go the SB100 route........Not that difficult to accomplish these days as most of the California Motor Vehicle departments have finally worked the bugs out of the process.
