New Jersey Registration
I'm purchasing a Backdraft cobra from Washington State and It's titled as follows
Year 1965 Make KitV Model Style Series Body Roadster The engine block code is D4AE-8015-AA8 6A17. Can I register it as QQ plates? If not what is the process do I need a full blown safety inspection? Should I just try and register it as a plane 1965 car? |

You will not get QQ plates, do not try, it will only open you up for a problem that may require you to enter the full NJ process (which you do not want to get involved with). Simply walk in with your title and let them guide the way. |

The car is already titled? Then it gets a like and kind title in NJ The make "KitV" is your only concern, and may get your cars paperwork pulled by the special titles division on State Street in Trenton. if that happens, then you must go through he "kit car" process in NJ, from scratch. Not impossible, just time consuming........ Can you get QQ plates, sorry, NO, and if you attempt to do so, you risk the forfeiture of your paperwork and your car. Enough said. Register the car with regular plates, or send in for a set of custom plates, pass inspection to 1965 (or 1974 per the year of your engine block) standards, and be done with it. Bill S. |
Easy Bill I'm a newbee and the last car I asked about was titles as a 2006 and that makes a big difference.
Step by Step 1) Title and register it as if it were a standard 1965 car. 2) Take it to emissions inspection and they know to use 1965 or 1974 standards 3) Pay tax on purchase price and Done - If it gets pulled to special titles do they send me my original title back or do the keep it. |

2: Take it to your corner gas station that does state inspections 3: yes Last question is a 50/50, it all depends on who's desk in Trenton your paperwork lands on. Bill S. |
Help for Newbie in NJ
Hey guys...getting a new Superformance MkII, engine is 74 block. Anyone have guidance regarding the process to get title, reg and plates? Do I just bring along the purchase agreement & engine build details to DMV? Since it is a new build, what year is the car? (i.e. can I say it is a 1964 Cobra?) Sounds like I may need to go to a specific DMV site for inspection (e.g. Morristown) from reading some of the other posts.
My office is in NY so I guess I can try to register there if it is any easier? Any advice would be appreciated... TIA! |

You will not be able to legally title your car in the state of NJ as a "1964" or anything vintage. You can get custom plates for your car, you cannot get historic or QQ type plates though. Yes, it is really that easy. Bill S. |
Thx Bill!

Bill S. PS: Where in NJ are you located? |
Car is ready but waiting for the weather to clear up before I pick it up...will probably need to go to Westfield for inspection. I am in warren...

Finally got the Trenton paperwork done and scheduled to go to Asbury Park in a couple weeks. Spoke to the guy down there and he seems OK, he gave me a bunch of the things on his inspection checklist. So one item relates to ground clearance. He was saying that I need 2" of clearance imagining that the car is sitting on its rims without tires.
Anyone ever hear of anything like that? I have a slabside so the exhaust system is routed underneath the car - that may be a problem since the muffler is a bit lower than the frame. Crazy regs... :( I am planning on going there anyway and assuming that he will give me a punchlist of stuff to do. Just hope nothing major...my patience is wearing thin |

Thx guys! Appreciate the guidance...stay tuned

My car is titled as a 1991 Everett Morrison. Will it be possible to get QQ plates in 2016?

If you can't make the clearance needed look at adjusting the leaf springs to raise the ride height for the inspection. You can jack the car up and use a spring clamp to "lock" the leafs in a higher ride height. Contact me if you need help on how to. |

No, kit cars are not eligible regardless of the year produced |

Thx guys...car in shop, will see if my guy can work on clamping springs at higher ride height. Otherwise, will need to go to the custom wheel diameter route and or rework exhaust somehow.

Oh, inspection on Tuesday 22nd...stay tuned.
