Default Cobra assembled out of State, bringing home soon...

My car will be ready next month, so, I plan to go to DMV in November and start the registration process so I can have a TOP to drive on while waiting to do SB100 in January. I plan to complete the CHP thing before January, then hope to get the SB100, then go to BAR, and maybe Brake and Light Inspction, then finally back to DMV for plates.
What do you guys think? Is this a sound plan.

Thanks guys!!

Randy, I trust your opinion and comments on CA registration stuff. I read your comments in the FFROG also and I believe you to be an expert on this. Blublur seem to know a lot too and he has been helpful.

The only main concern I have is that my MCO from FFR has to invoice number right on it and the invoice came with the MCO. On the invoice, it has my name in the Bill To: box but also has my builder's name and address in the Ship To: box.

I bought the kit from FFR then had it shipped to my builder out of state, same for the engine and tranny. I just wonder if DMV is going to have issues with this? Some told me just to photo copy the invoice and blank out the Ship To box so the invoice only has my name therefore no questions. But I want to do everything by the book so I have no worries of future hassles.

I just want to do it right with the registration thing. Not everyone has the mech aptitute and/or time to build a SPCN and so in reading the DMV's SPCN definition, I don't see see a problem with anyone buying all the parts for a SPCN and paying someone to put together for private use.

Do u know of others who have done it this way? Thanks. You may e-mail me if you prefer to be discreet about the info you share.

Thank you!

In my opinion, I don't think you will have a problem with the "to: builder"; heck, you had to ship it there somehow!

The key issue that you're trying to avoid is a single receipt vehicle, and from what you've written, you don't have a single receipt vehicle. I had this problem with the DMV a few years ago, so I'm pretty familiar with it.

You basically have mutliple receipts for the parts and at least a single receipt for labor (assembly and maybe another for body/paint). As a reference, I use SPFs/Backdrafts - here the owner typically has two receipts: one for the roller and another for the purchase/installation of the drivetrain. And the DMV is just fine with this. So using this example as a "bare minimum" example, in my opinion, I think your plan is just fine.

BTW, I'm no expert - I just voice my opinion freely. There are many who know a lot more than I do about this titling stuff and many more who have much more experience than I do.

Regards,
Randy R...

Randy, thank you for your response. I appreaciate it. Yes, I have separate receipt for everything. One from FFR for the kit, another from Five Star Ford for the drive train, for labor, etc. etc. (It is a non-donor build so I had to buy all the pieces and I have many receipts)

Cool, I feel better now. Thank you!

By they way, have you any pictures of your SPF that you can share?

FF, Do yourself a favor and print up a spread sheet with all the expenses and details. That way when you go to DMV and hand them a big pile of reciepts you can say "Here I listed them all out and totalled it up for you" and this should match the statement of construction details. I did this and she just browsed through the reciepts for about 2 seconds and entered the numbers I provided. Made her job easier and made me look organized and above board about the costs.

XLR,

Thanks for the advice. I am thinking about doing that. It would also do me good so I have a quick reference for my expenses and parts. Oh yeah, I intend do anything I can to make the DMV visit as painless as possible.

Thanks.
