Default Will I get busted re-titling in Cali???

am looking at several completed replicas that the owners claim are smog exempt. When I ask if the car is registered SPCNS per SB100 or SB1578 they go dumb. Have run into several that are titled as "65 Ford" & they say they have never had to smog them. I don't doubt them, but am wondering if I'd get busted when re-titling in my name & be forced to line up in January for the SB-100 dance... or undergo the SB1578 process. Am I reading this situation correctly?

I've seen the SB-100 stickers & sequence numbers, but should additional documentation be provided with the sale? Also, what documentation/evidence should there be if registered under SB1578?

Just one question should clear this up:

Were the cars in question REALLY built in 1965?

If not (and come on, who we kidding here, you KNOW the answer) you better have Calif documentation that makes the car 100% legal or you could be in serious trouble. THATS why Calif currently has an AMNESTY program (will be ending soon) for 'improperly' titled cars.

You won't get "busted", if you re-title it properly as an SPCNS when you begin the re-registration process after purchase. The person who titled it as a "1965 Whatever" may get busted, but not you, unless, of course, you attempt to re-register it as a "1965 Whatever".

Slick - I bought a kit that was registered as a 1965 Ford - just don't go there - buy one that has an SB100 or SB1578 if you are in CA, period or just don't buy one at all. I just turned in my license plates, pink slip and registration and God knows what will happen from here.

Exclamation Your already busted!

Ca DA Morgester reads these boards!

He is 'actively' investigating illegally registered cars in Cali! Watch your mailbox for a letter from him, or maybe a PM! He is looking for candidates for the 'amnesty' program!

Good luck,
jdog
P.S. If you 'cooperate' they'll go easy-er on you!
