Yes, you'll need to begin the process before you get in line on January 2nd. I'm not a registration expert, but I think you'll have to retitle your car as an SPCNS. You'll have to pay some fees and then get your VIN assignment from the CHP. The CHP may just use your existing VIN or not. Thus, you'll need to fill out an Application for New Title and a Statement of Construction. Here's a primer:

jmillington,
You definitely want to complete all of the paperwork and pay your fees before you visit the DMV on 1/2/09. That way, the only thing you need to worry about is the DMV reps getting through on the phone to get your SB sequence number. How is your car currently registered? Read the post from Mr. Morgester in the reg forum, as the state of CA is kicking off an amnesty program. Good luck! If you have all of your "ducks in a row" you should be fine. |
Talk to the Sacramento CC members and find the most experienced DMV in your area. It pays to find one that knows what they're doing as it relates to SPCNS registration.
Doug and I did not use our local DMVs and we drove a distance and worked with an experienced DMV in our area. |
I went through the Placerville office and they were very knowledgeable regarding the SB100 process. I went before January 1st and got all my paperwork in order and paid all of the fees so all I had to do was stand in line and get my number.
Good luck, Jason |
Thanks for the info, I'll do the same! :)
