where to get frame plans

hi guys im dave from downunder new zealand

i am wanting to build a scratch built cobra and need some frame plans
with measurements etc will probably be 302 powered
are there any sites or books that would get me started ?
was going to build a locost lotus 7 copy

but those 4 cylinders just dont sound right when compared to the
sound of a v8

i have all the equipment and can weld the car will be used as a track car only

Is there an Almac around you could look at? There are a couple of other Kiwis on here. Where are you at?

thats the body im going to use could probably buy the frame too but i like to make life hard for myself so im planning on building my own
so just need some chassis specs

What are you thinking Torana front end, Jag rear? I don't know if the Almac is 90" wheelbase. I would go with a spaceframe or backbone if you're going to track it. Have you seen the Dixon (7 style) I think it is made in Glenfield on the North Shore, uses Yoda twin cam 5 speed power? I used to teach the guys son many moons ago.

could use torana but they are getting scarce maybe toyota hiace van
so maybe build what they call a mcsorly chassis which is a longer and wider
7 type frame and fit the cobra body to the frame ?
I dont know how long you have been away from nz for but this might make you smile

i was having some drinks

with my mates when one said he had just brought a body for a rally car he is building mk2 escort 2door $5000

nz dollars for a standard 2 door escort without motor or gearbox that they will have to cage and seamweld
they looked at another one i know of that was for sale but the guy wanted $10000

for a rolling body i remember when you could buy one for $100

Probably run 8'' or 9'' and 4 link with coilovers
5 speed falcon toploader
four pot falcon brakes front or maybe mitsubishi brembo evo brakes
2pot rear ?
may try toyota corona rake and pinion ?

wow that puts it in perspective. I have been away for a while! There was a time when if you had a piece of property people would just drop them off

Are you thinking RHS (rectangular) tube frame or tubular?

yeah oh for a back yard full of old 2 door escort bodys.Was thinking

rhs but also looking at the original type twin tube chassis but in 4 ''i think the original was 3''. The easiest way would be to just make up a 3x2 rhs chassis and hang
smaller frames or brackets off this for the body.what ya think ? would really
like to make it as simple as possible

Is that you burning fuel on the Waikato? I am using tube to original spec, 289 are 3", 427's are 4" It is a little hard to cut and hold. I just moved a Bridgeport in so that makes them alot easier to do. RHS and a chopsaw is what I'd recommend for what you're looking at. Check out the build galleries on here for design ideas.

at $1.53 nzd a litre for 91

its getting really expensive to take the boat out for a blast

yep have a chopsaw so i suppose its about time for action

Check my gallery, it's just a pile of pieces. I do need to update it some. I am starting to get into more detail than I thought I would for originality but I'll have what I want when I'm done. My advice would be don't belabour details just get on with it.

hi dave.fellow kiwi in auckland.look up roccobra.co.nz.hes using later model toyta stuff for his.good idea,but a little more expensive than jag etc and old stuff.i think the idea is to use as many parts from one car as you can to help everything match.its hard to re invent the wheel by mixing and matching.depends on how you want it to look.

Have to confess that my interest in Cobras (cobrae?) is fairly academic - but I would be interested in finding any drawings for a "standard" cobra chassis - either 289 3" or 427 4". Also interested in the original Ace drawings if anyone has some fairly authentic ones.

Meanwhile my minor contribution to those of you who are forging ahead with your projects is to bring to your attention a set of drawings for a chassis which got through in Australia with a 460 CID lump in it.

Hi people , i'm searching a frame idea too ... i build a chassi in 3dmax8 .. look at my gallerie ...... i will use a GM OPALA FRONT SUSPENSION ... i'm brazilian and a lot of people here use this kind of suspension ..... any ideas i'm accepting ....

Boarderline You don't hafta use a 4 cyl. Here is my build, actualy in gather/plan but now have nearly all the components. I' building a LC7 with a 351/393 and basicly Fox chassis components. Kinda like a lightweight Cobra without the body.
