Steering column shaft?
A friend in our Cobra Club gave me his old steering column tube from his Kirkham as he has upgraded to their new style- whatever that is?
I can fit my VW turn signal unit to the end of the tube by turning down the end by a few thousandth's, but I need to know what steering column shaft I can use in this column tube?
The inner bushing at the top and bottom are approximately .865 ID and are brass. I need the splined end shaft to mount my hub to and I think I need a splined end at the lower end for the steering shaft u-joints.
I've looked at the Flaming river stuff but can't make heads or tails out of anything. I guess a phone call might work, but last time I tried that they were "less than helpful". How much additional length do I need to plan for at the steering wheel/boss end?
Any ideas what I could use to mate up to my pieces? Some of you guys must have already done this research so I'm trying to avoid re-inventing the wheel here.
Thanks,
Bob

Hey Bob try finding us a 62-67 MG, after that they went to a collapsible shaft. Don't forget to find 2!

steering column shaft
Hey Bob, I can measure my flaming river column tomorrow and let you know how much of the shaft is available for the boss to mount on. Same thing at the lower end where the universal attaches. And I will try to measure the overall length of the shaft.
When I called the tech line at flaming river they were very helpful. But I can tell you that the guy that does returns has been out to lunch for weeks. He never called me back and I had to go over his head to get a RAN.
I will post the measurements here tomorrow.
Later, Karl

steering col meas.
hey bob, There is 1 5/8" of shaft showing for the boss to attach and approx. 1" at the bottom for the universal to attach. The OAL is approx. 32" tip to tip.
I hope this helps. Later, Karl

While I'm waiting for my shaft to show up, does anyone know what the top hanger and bottom clamp are called or where I'd look for them. I'm off to Mcmaster in the meantime.
Cheers Nick

Hey Bob and anyone interested. I got that MG column today and it is too new and won't work. It is the collapsible double D and doesn't fit my boss. Back to the hunt!

If you are looking for the hanger, try Tim Gunning. I know that he has reproduced the original hangar. He also has the correct shaft and u-joints. If you are interested, send him an e-mail at: bestof65@axci.net.

Scott,
Your email address for Tim is wrong. I believe the correct one is bestof65@azt1.com
