body buck construction

My intention is building a buck like this one, except it has the shape of the roadster body, not the coupe:

I assume no plans are available. What kind of wood and what material thickness is recommended? Looks like about 3/4" in the picture.

Any information is highly recommended!

I hate to sound realistic but if you don't know what type of wood and how thick I'd seriously ask myself about the undertaking I was considering. That being said I can get you started with some information if your serious but a wooden body buck doesn't do alot for you by itself.

Hi Simon,

The buck you are showing is Chuck Lindquists Coupe and it is built on an original style frame, that is where you start. After you build the first frame for the buck then you can build/weld/fabricate the second one for the actual car.

Contact Chuck and I'm sure he will be happy to share the details. The wood was plywood and I am not sure if it was 1/2 or 3/4.

Tony, I know Chucks internet site, its a great inspiration for everyone who is into car building. I'll ask him some questions about the details of the buck.

As far as the benefits of a body buck are concerned, I've seen aluminum Cobra bodies that were build without a buck. They looked similar to a Cobra - from 1/2 mile away. I think without a buck you'll never get the shape of the panels close to what you want.

However if you have any helpfull informations, I would be very interested.

My advise is buy a fiberglass cobra body that suits your taste. Layup a dozen or so more layers of glass on the inside of it, and use the exterior of it for a big hammerform. The finished body will be bigger by the thickness of the aluminum you're using.
