I had an AOL email from Chuck in regard to progress on my own car [or lack off:) ] last year, whats the deal with AOL, do their emails still work ? --or did the whole lot go missing? I havent tried to contact him recently, others here might have done so!

Hi guys,
I ran across this site while looking for Chuck's Daytona build. Dang I hate AOL. Anyway, if I can help with any metal shaping questions I'll be glad to. Another source for metal shaping knowledge is http://MetalMeet.com Lots of good info over there. I'm currently building an art deco roadster but a Daytona is in my long range dreams for the next project.Attachment 14913 I did not build a traditional buck but wish I had. |
Now there is a third option which is to build the frame and then order a Kirkham body from Hawk cars. Already attached to a small amount of tubing. I think the body is about $13,000 plus freight from the UK. $13,000-$5,000 in tools starts to make a little sense. But there's something about having an English Wheel, a sheet of aluminum, and some beer. Always leads to something.

OR, were you refering to the 10,000 Pound price ($1=0.7 pounds) sans the VAT? That would come to $14,285. Do US buyers NOT pay the VAT?

Just guessing here but Poland is a lot closer to GB that the USA and there
may be something with tariffs? that may make a big difference. |
I dunno Flip, but someone comes in here and says you can pick up a Kirkham body for 13k and shipping and it is interesting... but not true.

Kirkham, I believe, sells body-only units so that people with other cars can re-body theirs with a Kirkham shell. I'm sure I heard or read that somewhere. That would open up some very interesting possibilities. :)

My problem with them selling their bodies to just anybody, is someone that put their body on a bad built roller, would start telling people that it was a Kirkham. Kirkham might get a bad rap on their product. That would be my concern if I was Kirkham.

Well, if you look at their site, they do offer "phased" buying. But they do not price the body shell alone. Unique stop selling the shell only option for simialr reasons. Used to be, you could build a frame and order the shell. No more.

Okay, I probably missed it in the discussions so bear with me if so.
If a guy were to build his own roadster/coupe/GT40/ etc... body out of aluminum, what guage and grade of aluminum would you use? What do the Kirkhams use? Just curious, not that I'm trying to make a change of professions here or anything, but......;) Bob |
I think that the originals were made from aluminium alloy sheet of 0.062". That's 16 swg (standard width gauge), meaning that 16 thicknesses of the sheet make up a 1" thickness, if you see what I mean. :JEKYLHYDE

Per the Kirkham website, the Kirkham bodies uses an aircraft alloy that is stronger, a bit thicker (0.059" compared to 0.050"), and more dent resistant than the original aluminum used in the 1960’s.

According to the guage chart I have, .059 in steel sheet is 16 guage, .057 in aluminum sheet is 15 guage.
Still no idea what grade? T6- 6061 possibly? Bob |
