Guess it was up to the header manufacturer to do it that way. My headers (made by Kooks for Shelby) have the #5 pipe going over the shaft with a very nice straight shot towards the body.

Mine goes between the support and the shaft. Does not hit anything. No bending or denting. Just like the originals back in the 60's.

Morgan, your # 5 pipe is beautiful. It clears the area between the steering shaft and the body support with room to spare. I now understand why Shelby has them made this way, because they do apparently fit most cars. I could NOT get the # 5 pipe to fit from the top down (let alone even trying to get the flange through that space). I guess, as I kind of surmised, it is yet another example of my car being "special". Oh well, I am close to being done - even if it di take all day today to get the headers and side pipes on and tightened on one side of the car.
