Shelby GT 350 R

Guys:

I am looking for a GT350 R. Specifically, a "real" one, not a bitsa or clone.

I do check the SAAC newsletter as well as SCM, but no Rs listed for sale recently.

Should any of you know of one that may be for sale, I would certainly appreciate a heads-up.

Thanks,

Scott

Stauffer has one. It is in the current SAAC bul. sent out last week. good luck, sweet machine!

I have actually seen one in AutoTrader I believe...more power to you if you can afford the $250,000 those things go for.

Bony:

Thanks. I'll double check. Somehow I missed Staufer's ad.

BTW, is it possible to enlarge your avatars to get a bit more "detail"?

Matt:

I checked one in AT, but it was junk; a poorly done clone.
Another case of false advertising. But thanks for the idea.
$250M is a bit much. That sounds like what you'ld pay for a museum piece with impeccable provenance and virtually zero miles. Even then, it still sounds high.

I don't think you will get much lower....I can't remember the actual number of R models but there weren't but about 30-40 I think? Your going to pay for it no matter what...if you are looking for a clone then you can get in one for around $30K but a real R is going to set you back some bills.

The car on AT is still out there. The link is below

There is a GT-500 advertsied here in Hawaii, 40K. I went looked, (thats how we talk here). SEEMED to be original. The Shelby tag indicated it was a GT-350. When I inquired he say,

"I just pulled the small block and put in the side oiler". Even if the car is "real", what the hell is it now? Not a 500 and a screwed up 350!

Matt:

I hadn't seen that one! Definitely worth investigation!

SCM lists these as 150 - 165, so it will be interesting to see if this is now market correct.

Interesting that it's from Lima. Although it's been years since I visited Peru, I can't imagine soemone driving a car like this on those roads.

Thanks much.

There were 37 R Models built.

If I had @215K I'd buy it, but since I don't!........there was another selling for a year or so for $225K, this may be it, I don't remember the serial #. Rick Kopec's R Model recently sold for a 'rumored' 300K.

Scott Smith 09-25-2002 01:51 PM

John:

Thanks. I had heard Kopek sold his R model after the last SAAC event, but no one seems to know what he received. Your rumored 300 is the high; others I've heard were to the high end of the SCM values. Matt may be spot-on with his guesstimate.

Any rumors as to the identity of the new owner,? Not that it really matters; just curious.

If you are interested...one of the 12 or so 66 Trans Am notchbacks is for sale here in Dallas. Red with white Lemans stripes. Absolute provenance. Owner turned down 125k, but may be up to selling for reasonable price.

We paddocked with George Stauffer last summer at the BRIC at Elkhart Lake. The"R" code you are referring to was next to us. It was a very nice car. Most anything George represents is of very good quality. No stories. There was an independent Cobra Drag Car--not a DS--but this one had won many events in its life on the strip. Very nicely detailed.

Personally, these cars--"R" codes-- have really gained momentum over the past few years. I would want one with a good provenance if I had to pay that kind of money. Shades of 1989.

Scott Smith 10-01-2002 12:48 PM

Cal:

Was Stauffer actively campaigning the car, or was it recently restored and simply on display for sale? Bob said he too saw the car recently, but it was not tracked.

Have you checked in with Howard Pardee, the R model registrar? He does/did a newsletter for R owners a while back, and would be THE source for you. Reach him via SAAC headquarters. Maybe he'll sell you his, now that Ricky doesn't have one either.

You guys are the best!

In a little over a week, Club Cobra members have given me very solid leads on 10% of the GT350R models in existence!
That's quite a feat.

My thanks to all, and again especially Brent!
