Color of Sam Feinstein's 427 Cobra pre-green
Artist looking for info regarding colors of Feinstein's 427 Comp car.
I found this website with a good side view
http://www.virhistory.com/vir/press/full03/full-75.JPG
a side view of 427 Cobra, no. 72 in the circular roundel but the picture is in black and white. So I'm guessing:.
-White side pipes
-black wheels
-Stickers are Champion spark plugs (red and white)
-STP oval (red and white)
-roll bar flat black
But don't know what color his car was. Guessing Guardsman blue.
And what color helmet did he wear in those days?
Some strange decal above the Roundel, kind of like a miniature stretched checkered flag.
As far as hood stripes, can't tell from this view, looks like two white ones about 4" wide, a couple of inches apart. Or maybe two narrow white stripes with a third color inbetween. Anybody got that good a memory? Thanks for any tips. I talked to Finestein sometime in the last couple years but of course lost his number. He is helping promote a replica 427 Cobra.
Glad I found this view, the green and white livery he raced later was a horrible
jumble of scallops worthy of Ed "big daddy" roth....

Great shot, I talked to him recently at a car auction. He was telling me he ran his suspension soft and boy doesn't that shot prove it. I've been meaning to get in touch with him so you've motivated me to do that.

Based on the date of that picture, and the two more of the car on the track I have included here.... I question whether this car is CSX3009.
These were from 1968...
In that time frame, he ran a season or so with CSX3160....which was not the "Ollie" car.
Oh...yeah....this one was blue.

Well, I'm going to go out on a limb and say it was CSX3009. Take a look at those two holes (airjacks?) just above the side vents on the shot below of 3009 at VIR with Ed Lowther. The number 72 car posted above has them also. I don't have my registry in front of me - any chance that CSX3160 has them as well?

Both cars, the black & white photo and the white car are CSX3009, but Sam is only shown in the black & white image. The driver in the color image is Ed Lowther. In Sam's opinion, Ed was the most talented of all 427 Cobra racers.
The holes above the side vents are sockets for connecting an external battery in parallel. CSX3160 didn't have them.

So...that would indeed make the original photo 3009... maybe the quoted date on that picture is wrong... I didn't think Sam had 3009 in 1968.

Sam raced 3160 for the '69 season. He converted 3160 to race specs in the spring of '69.
Sam raced 3009 in A/P in '68 until it was damaged during transport in September '68 missing the '69 season

The color picture of the white car would predate the black and white photo since that is when Ed owned 3009.

I am also going to hazard a guess and say that the B&W photo of 3009 is possibly from VIR in April of '68. Sam is listed as runing car #72 for that race. Obviously, he can run #72 in any race, but it does increase the possibility that they might be one and the same.
A-Snake, Thanks for the info on what those holes are. I've seen similar on the Corvette Grand Sports and they were for an on-board jacking system. They actually did remind me a bit of electrical connections - almost like a larger version of the jacks you would use for the old style headphone 1/4 inch headphone plugs. I couldn't imagine why you would need them on a car. It makes a lot more sense now, thanks.
