Default Rear axles with SVT brakes...

I am in the process of installing the SVC supplied Moser axles with the SVT rear brakes. I got the spacers, bearings and retainers pressed on, and mounted the backing plates. I then put the axles in and installed the 4 bolts with the "C" shaped Moserthings- whatever they're called; it's basically what holds the bearing/axle in the housing.

Well, the right axle spins freely, but the left axle apparently needs trimmed a bit. The manual suggests cutting 3/16" off the end of the axle. here is where my question lies...

I have a friend with a bandsaw type steel saw that would cut through it like butter, but I am wondering if I have any other options. It seems that after the axle is trimmed, it would still need ground a bit to angle the end of the axle. If thats the case, couldn't I just use the grinder to shorten the axle up a bit? My only concern would be heat build-up from the grinding wheel. Would this effect the hardness of the axle? Should I not try it? The axle got hard to turn withing the last several turns of the nuts, so I don't think i'd need to take off a whole lot.

Thanks for any suggestions
Greg
