Pics of parking brake cable on Jag IRS?
Hello all,
Does anybody have any good, detailed photo's of how the parking brake cable connects to the parking brake calipers/mechanism on a jag IRS? We have a Unique 289 with a jag IRS, Wilwood brakes, that has the parking brake calipers installed on the brakes...but no parking brake handle etc... Just trying to get an idea of what kind of cable we need, and, how it is actually installed/connected to the parking brake calipers. I think I know what cable I need...I think, but if anyone knows for sure let me know...there are two types I can buy. But I'm so confused as to how it connects to the arms on the calipers to actuate them both simultaneously, I can't find any good pictures or diagrams. Thank you very much, -Dave |
Those are Girling calipers but should be similar attachments for Wilwoods.

Wow, thanks Chas, that helps a ton.
So it looks as if it's one cable...that essentially pulls the drivers side caliper arm towards center...while "pushing" the pass. side caliper arm towards center...squeezing them together. Nice, thanks. Any idea what the model # on that cable is? Thanks again, -Dave |
Both caliper arms pull towards center.
Contact Bob Putnam at ERA-that's where mine was sourced from in the '80's. |
thank you Chas, really appreciate it, you've been a big help.

Hi Dave,
I used a Jag cable, cut a lot off one end, then made another 'ball' to silver solder on the end. Instead of a round ball you can use a small section of round rod (I used a bolt shank). |
Awesome, thank you very much guys...makes a lot more sense now.
What I was missing was the "Y" shaped mechanism that connects to the passenger side PB caliper...makes much more sense now. Thank you |
Lokar makes a Jag cable the pulls both calipers at one time
|
That's the same as this cable-the clevis does it.
|
yeah, you're right...they def. do, those are the one's I was looking at.
Problem is, there are two types. EC-80JAGU, Jag Rear Brake Cables - Black Housing (specify year and model), $79.95 EC-80FU, Jag Rear-End w/Wilwood Brakes, $119.95 and EC-80WC, $23.95 On the Lokar site, the second is labeled as a "Jag Rear-End w/Wilwood Brakes" in one part's table...and "Ford Explorer/Wilwood Explorer Style Rear Disc Cable Kit - Black Housing (clevises included)" in another table, both on Lokar site. I called, and the guy I spoke with didn't sound too confident...probably go with the 2nd and see what I get. But it's confusing, don't want to waste time/money. Thanks, -Dave |

What year jag did the calipers come from? I have the old solid rotor style and need to upgrade to the vented rotors and newer style calipers.

I believe the IRS came from a 78 XJ6

To contact him, search here for his thread about 'clearing the shelves'. |
Have some spacers machined. look in the pic ,betwen the caliper halfs. They use an O'ring aroung the fluid hole.

Just contact Mike... |
I wrote to him about a few items, but he never replied. I just assumed he did not have the parts I was looking for. I will try again. I have the Series I or II set-up with the Dunlop calipers where the piston pods are actually separate units. It works ok, but if I could get something with the vented rotors, that would help a lot.
Thanks! |
Remember you can do nothing to modify the calipers until you know the thickness of the rotors to be used and the thickness of new brake pads.

My Unique has a twin cable set up. The handle is not "original" but works fine. Here are the part# from the JEGS catalog.
625-EHB-7000FK hand brake and boot $142.99 625-EC-80FU universal $119.99 625-EC-80WC wilwood clevis $23.99 This appears to be what is installed on the underside of the trans tunnel on my car. The clevis is used on the driver caliper arm. You could easily make the clevis. I slid some small washers and a piece of tubing over the cable to fit on the passenger caliper arm. Be sure and call Unique as well. They have always provided me with part numbers gladly. Be sure to adjust the caliper by removing the long thin PIA cotter pin and adjusting the large straight screwdriver screw. Details are on the ERA website for this. ENJOY |
