I remember this company. They also made a turbine engine that was specialy designed into a backplate that bolted onto the back of most rearends with a second pinion gear to drive the rearend of your car directly. This would augment the regular engine.

The Jet engines on the MR2 look like they are converted Turbochargers. They are relatively easy to build and I've been tempted to make one for a while now (just to anoy the neighbours :LOL: ).
I remember reading about a funny car that was powered by a Turbonique chemical turbine that directly drove the rear axle. It used the expanding gasses from a chemical rocket to drive the turbine. The thing produced huge ammounts of torque and HP but the problem was the huge flame it produced melted the road under the car. Cheers |

Art Arfonse is smiling and watching.......Anybody ever see the green monster in person???:JEKYLHYDE :JEKYLHYDE :JEKYLHYDE I saw him at Keystone Raceway in Western Pennsylvania in the mid 60's 1/4 mile in the 4 - 8 sec range depending when Art would slip the clutch and the percentage of throttle. It was pure guess work on his part. I was just a teenager in the crowd when he was being asked questions and his comment was: " I don't know what it is going to do except that when it, does it it does it very quickly".........Took some brass Cojones !!!! If any one is interested there are some good sites on home built Jet engines.

The guy's from New Zealand (where I grew up) and his site has a lot of interesting info and links to other home built Jet engine sites. This, http://www.vintagekarts.com/Rockets/Rockets.htm is the company that made the turbine engines back in the 60s. They made them for go karts, dragsters and rear end back plates with a second pusher pinion gear on your rear end. These engines added 850hp directly to the rear axel. The company name was turboniques.
I used to tell my son about when I was a kid, and you would see this little go kart out in front of a top fuel dragster until the kart hit about 150mph and had to back off because it was lifting off the ground. I am really glad that I found the site, so that he can see the same picture I saw almost 40 years ago. Ed |
