Welding on Jet Hot coating...

Can it be done? I need to weld tabs onto the exhaust hangers of my sidepipes. Not sure what "ceramic" really means as it applies to Jet Hot coatings (or equiv), but can I weld to it? Or do I need to grind off the coating or something like that?

You cannot weld on the ceramic surface of the coated parts. The fusion process that occurs during welding requires that the parent materials be of metal, ie: stainless steel, mild steel or another similar type of alloy. You will have to grind away the coating or find another way to attach the tabs.

So by "ceramic", they really mean some variant of what I've grown up to know as ceramic, huh? I can live with that. I guess I can grind off some of the coating and weld. Rather than shipping off the pipes to Jet Hot again, I'll just dab some silver paint on that area -- it's not very visible.

If you were talking Jet Hot specifically, then I couldn't comment. BUT, we have HPC over here and you can weld over their coating. I had some other pipes porcelain coated through another company, and they couldn't be welded.

It does discolour the surrounding area, but you definitely can weld the HPC. I was talking to them two days ago, because I need to weld in some exhaust temp bungs for datalogging purposes.

Here's an old photo of my pipes. Does the finish look the same as HPC USA?
