That's the way I use to do it but now my solinoid is under my dash (and I put it there when I built the darn thing). By the way I did say remove the coil wire and I guess I need to be a little more specific since someone might actually stick their skinney finger into the to of the combustion chamber 2 or 3 inches. Ok here is a playscript version of how to stick your finger into the #1 spark plug hole: Place your finger into the hole only as far as your finger nail and when the compression pushes your finger out look down at your harmonic balancer and continue bumping the starter (with remote starter, screwdriver or with a socket and breakover bar) until the timing pointer indicates tdc.

This may not work for everyone but it works well for me.
